Huber shines, unearned runs doom Bobcats Friday

Texas State drops series opener at Arkansas State 6-1, senior catcher ties career high for hits

JONESBORO, Ark. – The Texas State baseball team lost 6-1 to Arkansas State in the first game of a weekend Sun Belt Conference series Friday night at Tomlinson Stadium.

The Bobcats dropped to 22-23-1 on the year and 10-12 in league play, while the Red Wolves improved to 16-25 overall and 7-15 in the SBC.

Tonight's proceedings were delayed 40 minutes due to lightning in the area. This marked the ninth of 12 weekend series this season affected in one way or another by inclement weather.

TXST initially led 1-0 before A-State had the chance to bat, but the maroon and gold would not be able to score throughout the remainder of the evening. The home side scored five runs (four unearned) in the bottom of the fifth to swing momentum, and the team added an additional unearned tally in the seventh to earn the triumph.

Senior Jared Huber had a monster outing, finishing 3-for-4 on the night and tying his career high for hits in a single game. Junior Connor Reich (5-3) suffered the loss on the mound after allowing five runs (one earned) on five hits across 6.0 innings of work. Sophomore Broc Bosse pitched the final 2.0 frames and only gave up a single unearned marker on just one hit.

Arkansas State was held to just six hits on the night, with no member of the team recording more than one. Drew Tipton went 1-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored to pace the Red Wolves. Bradey Welsh (3-4) earned the win after allowing one run on five hits in 6.0 innings. He struck out five and walked one. Peyton Culbertson and Bo Ritter combined to concede no runs on one hit in the final 3.0 frames. The duo struck out four and walked two.

The series is slated to continue at 6:30 p.m. May 5.
