SAN MARCOS, Texas – After being forced to play shorthanded because of an injury, the Texas State women's tennis team closed out its regular season dropping a 4-0 decision against intrastate rival and Sun Belt Conference foe UTA on Sunday morning at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
Texas State was highly competitive in the doubles matches with two of the three outcomes being decided by tiebreakers. The Bobcats fell behind early in doubles play when freshman
Rishona Israel-Lewis injured her shoulder while trying to track down an overhead shot in the top-seeded match. Trailing 5-4 at the time of the injury, Israel-Lewis and
Alex Jones were forced to retire from the match following the injury, giving the win to Augusta Serio and Anna Wichert.
Ana Perez and
Julia Navajo-Melendez gave Texas State its lone victory in the match when they won a tiebreaker against Momoka Horiguchi and Nanaka Takeuchi by a score of 9-7 to win the No. 2 doubles match, 7-6.
The No. 3 match was also decided by a tiebreaker when
Joy Chia Ming Ming and
Sofia Murcia-Rodriguez dropped a 7-6 decision after losing the tiebreaker by a score of 7-4 against Almudena Boza and Carla Cerdan Vives.
UTA also took advantage of the injury when the Lady Mavs won three singles matches in straight sets with five of the Bobcats being forced to move up a spot in the lineup.
Boza defeated Chia Ming Ming by a score of 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 4 match. Then,
Alex Jones fell 6-3, 6-0 against Horiguchi in the No. 3 match and
Andrea Fuchs suffered a 6-2, 7-5 loss against Lucia Natal in the No. 5 contest. The other matches were halted after UTA secured the victory.
Texas State ends the regular season with its fourth straight loss and falls to 4-13 overall this spring. UTA improved to 8-7-1 with the victory. The Bobcats compete in the Sun Belt Conference Championship on April 19-22 at the Peachtree City Tennis Center in Peachtree City, Ga. Texas State will meet the No. 6-seeded team in the first round of the tournament.
