Women's Tennis Drops 4-2 Decision against Marquette

SAN MARCOS, Texas - In a day filled with comebacks, the Texas State women's tennis team fell short and suffered a 4-2 loss against Marquette on Thursday afternoon at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.

Texas State began the day with rallies to win two of the three doubles matches to capture the team point and take an early 1-0 lead.

First, Joy Chia Ming Ming and Sofia Murcia-Rodriguez overcame a 4-0 deficit when they won seven of the next eight points in a 7-5 victory over Isabella Franks and Lesley Foe in the No. 3 match.

Ana Perez and Julia Navajo-Melendez also collected a 7-6 victory against Andrea Amortegui and Paula Tormos Sanchez on the No. 2 court after they won the tiebreaker 7-2.

In the top-seeded doubles match, Alex Jones and Rishona Israel-Lewis overcame an early 2-0 deficit and came back to win the tiebreaker by a score of 7-5 to earn a 7-6 triumph over Fleur Eggink and Natalija Popovic.

Texas State increased its lead to 2-0 when Perez won the top seeded singles match after Tormas Sanchez was forced to retire with an elbow injury in the second set. Perez secured the first set 6-2 and was leading 3-0 when the match was halted.

The Golden Eagles answered by winning four straight decisions in singles matches to come back and hand the Bobcats their second straight loss.

First, Israel-Lewis fell in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) against Popovic in the No. 2 match. Then, Foe overcame a 5-2 deficit in the second set of the No. 5 match as Chia Ming Ming suffered a 6-4, 7-5 setback.

Jones and Navajo-Melendez ended the day with a pair of losses in three-set matches. First, Jones fell to Amortegui on the No. 4 court by a score of 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

Then, Navajo-Melendez dropped the final two sets (6-4, 6-2) in the No. 3 match against Eggink after winning the first set, 6-4.

The loss drops Texas State's overall record to 4-11 this season, while Marquette improves to 7-7. The Bobcats will host a pair of matches against Sun Belt Conference foes on April 6 and 8. Texas State faces ULM at 1 p.m. on April 6 and UTA at 10 a.m. on April 8 at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
