Coffey ties career high with two hits, Saturday doubleheader on deck

CONWAY, S.C. – The No. 30-ranked Texas State baseball team lost 8-0 to No. 27 Coastal Carolina in the first game of a weekend Sun Belt Conference series Friday night at Springs Brooks Stadium.

The Bobcats (14-6-1, 3-1 SBC) dropped their first league game of the season, while the Chanticleers (17-7, 4-0 SBC) remained unblemished in conference action.

CCU got on the board with solo runs in the third and fourth innings and then took a commanding 6-0 lead with a four-spot in the fifth frame. They added additional tallies in the sixth and seventh innings to complete the scoring.

The Bobcats tallied four hits on the night, led by sophomore Cole Coffey finishing 2-for-4.

Junior Connor Reich (3-1) suffered his first setback of the season after conceding five runs (four earned) on seven hits across the first 4.1 frames. He also struck out four and walked two. Juniors Seth Jordan and Anthony Pagano combined to allow three runs on five hits in the final 3.2 innings.

Texas State chased CCU all-conference starting pitcher Jason Bilous before he was able to factor into the decision. He needed 112 total pitches to get through just 4.1 innings, and he left after conceding no runs on three hits. He also issued a career-high seven walks and struck out six. Matt Eardensohn (3-0) pitched the final 4.2 frames to earn the win. He allowed no runs on no hits, while striking out two and walking none.

Cory Wood and Matt Beaird both finished with three hits for Coastal Carolina. Beaird had two RBIs and the duo both scored twice.

Texas State left 10 runners on base in the game, and both sides committed one error.

The series was originally slated for a Saturday-Sunday finish, but the Chanticleers have decided to play a doubleheader March 24 beginning at noon due to cold temperatures in the forecast for March 25.
