Bobcats Sweep Chanticleers Behind Rupp's Perfect Game

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State softball team (22-7, 5-0 SBC) earned a three-game sweep over Sun Belt Conference foe Coastal Carolina (14-14, 1-5 SBC), winning the third game of the set by a score of 10-0 in six innings at Bobcat Softball Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Bobcats remain perfect in SBC play and have won eight consecutive contests dating back to a 1-0 loss to Utah on March 4.

Senior pitcher Randi Rupp threw her second career perfect game, the fourth such game ever thrown by a Bobcat pitcher. Rupp faced 18 Chanticleer batters in the game, striking out 11 batters, including the first six she faced, while registering four fly outs and three ground outs. Her first perfect game came in a 12-0 victory over Houston Baptist on April 15, 2015. Katie Garnett tossed a perfect game against UMKC in a 4-0 win on Feb. 16, 2008 and Nicole Neuerberg spun perfection in a 6-0 win over arch-rival UTSA on April 14, 2001. The game also marks Rupp's third career no-hitter, joining Chandler Hall, Anne Marie Taylor and Monica Rivas as the only Bobcat pitchers to throw at least three career no-hitters.

"Today was a great way to cap off our week," head coach Ricci Woodard said. "I thought our hitters came out ready to compete, and that showed throughout the game. It was a big statement for Hailey (MacKay) to end the game the way she did. Obviously, Randi continued to throw the ball well. To throw a perfect game after a team has seen you is not an easy feat. She controlled the game from the first pitch."

Backing the perfection in the circle, the offense rang up 10 runs over six innings of play, starting with a trio of runs in the second frame. Ariel Ortiz started the inning with a leadoff walk and promptly stole second base. Tara Oltmann laced a triple down into the right field corner, scoring Ortiz from second. Two batters later, Haleigh Davis roped a double to deep right center to score Oltmann easily. Finally, Davis came around to score on an RBI single to right field off of the bat of Jaelyn Young.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Bobcats tacked on two more runs. Hailey MacKay singled to center and was waved home on a triple from Ortiz. Otlmann cashed in on her second RBI chance, scoring Ortiz on a looping sacrifice fly to right field.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Davis led off with a double down the left field line on the second pitch she saw. Kylie Matula walked after seeing 10 pitches in a pinch-hit role. Two batters later, also used as a pinch-hitter, Mari Cranek laid down a well-executed bunt and beat out the throw to first, loading the bases with one out. Kennedy Cline drew a walk to score Matula and leave the bases loaded for MacKay. The Arkansas transfer delivered the knockout blow, crushing a walk-off grand slam over the left field wall.

Next up, Texas State will link up with Texas at Red & Charline McCombs Field in Austin, Texas on Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. as the Bobcats aim to earn its ninth straight victory. TXST will stay on the road for a weekend series against Appalachian State. The opening game of the series from Boone, N.C. will take place on Saturday with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
