WACO, Texas – The Texas State softball team (19-7, 2-0 SBC) upset No. 11 Baylor (17-3) on Wednesday evening, 6-3, at Getterman Stadium. For the second consecutive season, an unranked Texas State team knocked off a ranked Baylor squad. Last season,
Randi Rupp spun a complete game shutout to help TXST escape No. 12 Baylor, 1-0.
"I could not be more proud of this group tonight," head coach
Ricci Woodard said. "The way we continued to battle and compete after the way the game started for us was unbelievable. Haleigh came up huge with not only the two-run homerun but the two base runners she threw out were game changers. Randi settled in and took control of the game to give us a chance to gain some composure after the first inning. She did another great job for us tonight."
Baylor jumped out to an early lead, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first frame. The Bears scored both runs before the Bobcats could record an out. As coach Woodard stated, Rupp settled in and retired 27 of the 29 Baylor batters she faced. Rupp went the distance, allowing eight hits and two walks while striking out a pair.
After being no-hit through the first time through the lineup, Texas State evened the score in the top of the fifth inning.
Bailee Carter drew a walk before
Haleigh Davis stepped to the plate. The sophomore catcher lifted a deep drive to left center field, swatting her third home run of the season.
The Bobcats tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth to gain a lead on the Bears.
Christiana McDowell reached on a bunt single to lead off the inning and promptly stole second base.
Hailey MacKay singled to center field, scoring McDowell from second to put the Bobcats in the lead.
Ariel Ortiz drove a triple to left center to score
Meagan King, pinch running for MacKay, from second.
Tara Oltmann closed out the frame with a single to center field to chase home Ortiz.
The Bobcats garnered eight hits off of the Baylor pitcher, coming from eight different batters. All nine batters to see an official at-bat reached base safely.
Next up, Texas State will be back in town for a trio of games in the first of five conference home series of the 2018 campaign. The Bobcats will take on the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers twice on Saturday, 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., and once on Sunday, noon.
