Rupp's Historic Day Leads TXST Over USD

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Texas State softball team (6-4) closed out the Littlewood Classic at Farrington Softball Stadium on the campus of Arizona State University with a victory. The Bobcats edged out San Diego (6-4) of the West Coast Conference, 2-1, on a historic afternoon for senior pitcher Randi Rupp.

Rupp entered the game with 1,014 career strikeouts, just five shy of the school record set by Nicole Neuerburg, who played for the Bobcats from 2001-04. She struck out 10 Torero batters over seven innings, topping Neuerburg's 13-year school record.  Rupp went the distance for the seventh time this season, allowing four hits and one earned run.

Along with being on top of the Texas State record book in career strikeouts, Rupp now sits in the top three in career wins, 86, appearances, 147, complete games, 82, and shutouts, 34.

Offensively, both teams struggled to find a groove early in the game as both pitchers carried shutouts into the fourth inning. The Bobcats were the first to get a run across, scoring in the top of the fourth frame. With two outs, Brianna Sannem stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter and drove a double through the left side. Haleigh Davis, TXST's next batter, singled up the middle to score Sannem from second.

The Toreros broke through in the fifth inning, stringing together a pair of two-out hits. Sarah Stone doubled to center and was chased home on a single up the middle off of the bat of Katie Vretzos. The RBI single knotted the game at one.

To open the sixth inning, Hailey MacKay drew a walk before being lifted for a pinch runner, Meagan King. King scored on an RBI triple from freshman Tara Oltmann. The run proved to be the winning run for the Bobcats. The win over San Diego gave TXST four out of five games played in the Littlewood Classic, defeating North Dakota twice and Illinois State.

The Bobcats will be back on the diamond on Feb. 23 for the FAU "Strike-Out Cancer" Tournament. The team will compete in five games, including two against Columbia, and one game each against Dartmouth, Florida Atlantic and Tulsa. Texas State will open the tournament with a neutral site game against the Lions of Columbia on Feb. 23 at 3:45 p.m.
