Bobcats secure non-conference road win over TAMU-CC, 60-53

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas State women's basketball team (3-3) earned a hard-fought victory over Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Islanders (2-2) on Monday night, 60-53, in a game that featured 47 whistled fouls at the Dugan Wellness Center.

Junior guard Brooke Holle led the Bobcats in scoring for the first time during the 2018-19 campaign. She tallied 13 points on 3-of-6 shooting from 3-point range. She also connected on all four of her free throw attempts and grabbed seven rebounds.

Senior guard Toshua Leavitt secured her 13th straight double-figure scoring game with 11 points. She struggled from the floor, hitting 3-of-10 shots and just 1-of-8 shots from behind the arc, but was able to score the final four points of the game to seal the win for the Bobcats.

Sophomore forward Jayla Johnson continued her strong offensive play. Johnson ended the contest with 10 points and seven rebounds. She hit the 10-point plateau for the fifth consecutive contest and is averaging 13.4 points per outing over the last five games.

Senior guard Tasia Foman scored a game-high 22 points on 9-of-11 shooting, including a pair of made 3-point field goals off the backboard. She tallied 12 points on 5-for-5 shooting in the first half. Junior forward Alexis Bryant added 18 points and five rebounds to the Islander line. Most of her damage came via the charity stripe as she converted 8-of-11 attempts from the line. She also successfully made 4-of-5 shots from the floor.

For the fifth game in six tries, Texas State was on the wrong side of the halftime scoreboard. The Bobcats trailed the Islanders by a 27-26 count after the first 20 minutes of play. In the first half, head coach Zenarae Antoine was forced to turn to the bench early and often as she played 10 Bobcats. Six TXST players entered intermission with at least two fouls in the scorebook.

Texas State responded on the defensive end in the third quarter to regain the advantage. The Islanders were forced into several tough shots in the frame and shot a putrid 2-of-12 (16.7 percent) from the floor in the quarter. TXST outscored the home team 16-9 to take a six-point lead into the final stanza.

Junior guard Bailey Holle halted the Islander momentum in the opening stages of the fourth quarter. She drove the left side of the lane and muscled her way to the rim, drawing a foul and converting the layup attempt. The and-one put the Bobcats up by a score of 44-38 with 7:20 remaining on the clock. At the 6:00 minute mark, it was junior forward Jazza Johns with the hoop and the harm. Her three-point play extended the lead to nine points. After a furious late-game rally from the home team, Leavitt quieted the crowd with a clutch 12-foot floater as time expired on the shot clock with 23 seconds left on the clock. On the next possession she calmly stepped to the line and buried a pair of free throws to secure the Bobcat victory.

Up next, Texas State continues a brief two-game road trip starting at 7 p.m. in Stillwater, Okla. for a non-conference tilt with Oklahoma State.
