Texas State suffers 66-55 setback at Oklahoma State

STILLWATER, Okla. – The Texas State women's basketball team (3-4) hung tough with Oklahoma State Cowgirls (6-0) on Friday night, but ultimately fell by a score of 66-55 at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Junior guard Brooke Holle led the Bobcat scoring attack, netting a team-best 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor. She added three rebounds and a pair of assists.

Senior guard Toshua Leavitt ran her double-figure scoring streak to 14 games with a 15-point night. She finished the game hitting 3-of-9 shots from the perimeter. The sharpshooter has now made 277 career 3-point field goals, trailing Leslie Logsdon (Western Kentucky, '05) by one triple on the Sun Belt Conference all-time record board.

Senior forward Zandra Emanuel turned in her best performance of the season. She tallied eight points and a team-high eight rebounds in a career-high 33 minutes of run.

The host Cowgirls were led by sophomore forward Vivian Gray. She scored a game-high 23 points on 9-of-17 shots. She also recorded six rebounds and three assists. Sophomore guard Braxtin Miller chipped in 17 points, nine rebounds and eight assists for Oklahoma State.

Both teams struggled offensively in the early stages of the game. Texas State converted 6-of-30 (20.0 percent) shots from the floor in the first half. The Cowgirls were marginally better from the floor, shooting 9-of-26 (34.6 percent) to carry a 25-18 advantage into the halftime break.

In the third quarter, the two teams found an offensive rhythm. OSU outscored TXST by a count of 23-18, nearly equally the scoring output of the first 20 minutes of play. Oklahoma State used a 7-0 run to pull away from the Cats, upping the lead to 15 points with 4:25 left in the third quarter. TXST was able to close the deficit to 12 at the end of the quarter on a 3-point field goal from Holle.

A layup from Leavitt and a pair of triples from Holle in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter cut the home team's lead to five points. The five-point margin was the closest the game had been since OSU led 25-20 with 9:47 to play in the second quarter.

The Cowgirls immediately answered. Sophomore guard Jaden Hobbs buried a pair of 3-pointers in back-to-back possessions to push the Oklahoma State advantage back to 11 points. Hobbs finished the game with 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting from behind the arc. The margin never fell below nine points for the remainder of the contest.

Up next, Texas State will be back inside the friendly confines of Strahan arena at 7 p.m. on Dec. 4 for a matchup with St. Thomas.
