TXST downed by ORU despite Johnson’s career day, 81-64

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State women's basketball team (2-3) was toppled by the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles (3-3) on Saturday afternoon at Strahan Arena by a score of 81-64.

Sophomore forward Jayla Johnson played her best basketball game as a Bobcat despite the loss. She poured in a career-best 23 points (7-of-16 shooting) and tied a career-high with seven rebounds. Johnson converted all seven attempts at the free throw line. The game marks the fourth straight for Johnson in which she has netted at least 10 points.

Senior guard Toshua Leavitt extended a pair of streaks in the game by scoring 10 points on 2-of-6 shooting from behind the 3-point line. The Nixa, Mo., native has tallied double-figures in the last 12 games for the Bobcats dating back to last season. She has also drained at least two 3-point field goals in 24 consecutive games. Leavitt also posted a game-high seven assists.

ORU had three players in double-figures, led by junior forward Rylie Torrey. She scored 22 points and grabbed five rebounds for the Golden Eagles. Maya Mayberry added 18 points, while Lakota Beatty chipped in 10 points and a team-best four assists.

The visiting team was highly efficient on the offensive end of the floor. ORU netted 29-of-53 (54.7 percent) shot attempts and 13-of-27 (48.1 percent) from behind the arc. The 3-point field goal total marks the first time that Texas State, the nation's top-ranked 3-point defense a season ago, allowed an opponent to make at least 10 3-point field goals since March 2, 2017.

Texas State fell behind early after ORU opened the game up with three quick triples. The visiting team led 11-6 with 5:45 remaining in the first quarter. Texas State scored the next seven points of the contest to gain the lead. Leavitt capped off the quarter with a runner off the window at the buzzer. TXST led 19-16 at the end of one.

The visiting team outscored the Bobcats 54-29 over the next 20 minutes of play to put the game away. The biggest spurt for the Golden Eagles came at the midway point of the second frame. ORU outscored the Bobcats 16-4 during a 5:41 time period to turn a two-point deficit into a 10-point advantage. Torrey sparked the run with a pair of made 3-pointers and two made free throws.

Up next, Texas State hits the road for a two-game road trip starting at 7 p.m. on Nov. 26 at Texas A&M – Corpus Christi. The Cats will then play a 7 p.m. game on Nov. 30 at Oklahoma State.
