Leavitt’s season-high 25 points lead TXST over UTSA, 68-60

SAN ANTONIO – The Texas State women's basketball team (2-2) defeated the UTSA Roadrunners (2-3) on Tuesday night at the UTSA Convocation Center by a score of 68-60.

Senior guard Toshua Leavitt extended her double-figure streak to 11 games with a game-high 25 points. She also dished out a career-best eight assists and collected a pair of steals in 37 minutes of action. Leavitt connected on five 3-point field goal attempts to give her multiple made 3-pointers in 23 consecutive games.

Sophomore forward Jayla Johnson continued her terrific start to the 2018-19 season with 12 points, all coming in the second half. She has reached double-figures in the scoring column in three-consecutive outings dating back to the Nicholls contest. Johnson also grabbed six rebounds and rejected one shot.

Senior forward Zandra Emanuel tallied a season-best nine points and six rebounds in the victory. She scored seven points (3-for-3 shooting) in a highly productive first half.

UTSA was led by junior forward Marie Benson. She recorded a double-double, posting 17 points and ripping down 12 rebounds. She also notched a game-high five blocked shots. Despite the high point total, Texas State made life difficult for Benson as she needed 21 shot attempts to score her 17 points.

After getting off to slow starts in each of the first three games of the season, TXST shot out of the gates to score 15 of the first 19 points of the ballgame. However, UTSA narrowed the lead heading into the halftime break to two points. Freshman guard Ja'Kayla Bowie scored TXST's final six points of the first half, including a layup just before the halftime buzzer to give the Cats a 30-28 lead at the break. The margin signified the first time Texas State held a lead at the half in the 2018-19 campaign.

Much of the second half was played within a five-point margin. Texas State remained in control but could not put the game out of reach until late in the fourth quarter.

Benson put home a layup to bring the Roadrunners within one point at 55-54 with 3:39 left on the clock. In the next 60 seconds Leavitt would bury two big 3-pointers to push the Bobcat lead to seven points. The lead would eventually grow to nine points before settling at the final score of 68-60.

The Bobcats were able to ice the game away by making five free throws in a row in the final 1:04 of regulation. Both Johnson and Bowie calmly knocked down a pair of attempts to seal the victory for the visiting Bobcats.

The win was the first for the Bobcats in San Antonio since defeating the Roadrunners by a score of 57-53 on Dec. 4, 2014.

Up next, Texas State will matchup with Oral Roberts at noon on Nov. 24 inside the Strahan Arena. The Bobcats will have a quick turnaround follow the game with ORU, as the team hits the road for a 7 p.m. on Nov. 26 at Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.
