Win streak halted in Jonesboro

Texas State falls to Arkansas State in five sets, 17-match win streak snapped

JONESBORO, Ark. – The Texas State volleyball team saw its 17-match win streak snapped in a 3-2 (25-18, 17-25, 19-25, 25-18, 15-13) loss to Arkansas State Friday night inside First National Bank Arena.

The Bobcats (22-6, 13-1 Sun Belt) were riding the third-longest win streak in school history and were on the longest run since 2000. The Red Wolves improved to 16-10 on the year and 8-5 in conference play.

Due to the setback, the maroon and gold were unable to clinch the Sun Belt Regular Season Championship outright. They still need one more victory or one more loss from Appalachian State in the final two weeks to gain sole possession of the league crown.

Sophomore Brooke Johnson (17 assists, 17 digs) registered the eighth double-double of her career. Senior Amy Pflughaupt and junior Cheyenne Huskey both recorded 11 kills, while true freshman Emily DeWalt posted 19 assists and junior Micah Dinwiddie at 15 digs.

Carlisa May finished with a match-high 22 kills, while adding 13 digs. Ellie Watkins (30) and Julianna Cramer (21) combined for 51 assists, Macey Putt (13) and Madison Brown (11) contributed 24 kills, and Kenzie Fields (16) and Tatum Ticknor (12) tallied 28 digs.

Arkansas State led in kills (63-53), attack percentage (.289, .226), assists (58-46), and digs (67-62). Texas State won the ace (10-6) and block (10-8) battles.

SET 1
The Red Wolves took advantage of a sluggish start by the Bobcats to claim the opening period 25-18. The home side turned a 5-5 standstill into an 11-7 lead and stayed on top the rest of the way. Texas State was unable to find its footing on enemy grounds and could not get any closer than three points.

SET 2
TXST eventually found a groove and evened proceedings by winning the second 25-17. A-State initially enjoyed a 7-4 lead, but a four-point run put the maroon and gold ahead by a single tally. The two teams exchanged points on each of the next nine rallies to draw level at 13-13. The rest of the stanza was all Bobcats. They scored seven-consecutive points to go on top 20-13 and maintained the momentum the rest of the set.

SET 3
Texas State won the third frame 25-19. Neither team could pull away in the opening moments. The first swig of separation didn't occur until the Bobcats turned a narrow 14-13 lead into a 20-15 advantage. That proved to be the decisive moment as the Red Wolves never got any closer than four points.

SET 4
The match went the distance after Arkansas State secured the fourth set 25-18. A-State was able to take a 17-11 lead after initially clinging to a narrow 10-9 margin. The home team stretched its advantage out to 20-13, and the Bobcats were never able to recover.

SET 5
The two teams chopped up the first 14 points to sit at 7-7, and it was the Red Wolves who were able to score five of the next six points to go ahead 12-8. They held six match points at 14-9. Texas State was able to use a five-point run to get within one at 14-13, but the visitors were ultimately in too deep a hole to overcome as Arkansas State closed out the night on the sixth match point.

A-State evened the all-time series at 9-9 and improved to 5-0 all-time over the Bobcats in five-set matches.

The Bobcats continue their final road swing to end the regular season with a 6:30 p.m. match Nov. 3 against Little Rock in Little Rock, Ark.
