TXST secures sole possession of Sun Belt Regular Season Championship

Texas State tops Little Rock in five sets, spoiling Senior Day for Trojans in Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Texas State volleyball team defeated Little Rock 3-2 (25-23, 11-25, 25-19, 18-25, 15-7) Saturday night in a Sun Belt Conference match inside Jack Stephens Center.
 
The victory for TXST spoiled Senior Day for the Trojans (16-11, 8-6) and gave the Bobcats (23-6, 14-1) sole possession of the 2018 Sun Belt Regular Season Championship.
 
True freshman Emily DeWalt was the fulcrum of the offense with 39 assists, while also providing 13 digs. Junior Micah Dinwiddie was the catalyst of the back row, adding 12 digs and eight assists. Junior Cheyenne Huskey posted 12 kills and nine digs, while true freshman Sarabi Worsley-Gilbert added 11 kills for the winning side.
 
Taylor Lindberg finished one dig shy of a triple double for the Trojans, posting 22 assists, 12 kills and nine digs. Maritza Mesa had 12 kills of her own, while Mya Robinson tallied 14 digs and 11 kills. Veronica Marin added 11 kills, nine blocks and seven digs, while Pamela Zuluaga contributed 31 assists and Diana Giordani recorded 23 digs.
 
LR led in kills (61-51), attack percentage (.258-.139), assists (58-50), digs (75-61) and blocks (12-9). Texas State led the way in aces (9-3).
 
SET 1
The Bobcats won the first set 25-23. They scored the first six points of the match, but Little Rock fought back to within one at 9-8. TXST was able to extend the advantage back out to 14-9 and later 20-13. The home side battled back to within one at 24-23, but an attack error gave Texas State the opening period.

SET 2
Little Rock took the momentum gained in the waning moments of the first and used it to dominate the second to the tune of a 25-11 scoreline. The Trojans raced out to an 8-3 advantage and never looked back, leading by as much as 16.
 
SET 3
Texas State righted the ship to capture the third 25-19. Neither team was able to find a lead of more than two until the maroon and gold squeaked ahead 16-13. They were able to move up 19-14 and exchange rallies the rest of the way to polish off the frame.
 
SET 4
Little Rock scored the first seven points and cruised to a 25-19 fourth-set triumph. Texas State was unable to get any closer than five points after falling behind by the early deficit.
 
SET 5
The Bobcats came out for the fifth with a renewed vigor and would not be denied sole possession of the regular season crown. They raced out to a 10-4 lead, forcing the home side to use both timeouts. The remainder of the match was never in doubt as the maroon and gold closed out the Trojans 15-7.
 
TXST swept the season series over LR and improved to 8-5 all-time in the series. The Bobcats also improved to 4-1 in five-set matches this year.
 
Texas State will close out the regular season with a road match at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 9 against UT Arlington.
