Texas State Falls 12-7 at Troy

Box Score TROY, Ala. – The Texas State football team (3-8, 1-6 Sun Belt) held Troy (9-2, 7-0 Sun Belt) to its season low in points and total yards, but couldn't overcome six turnovers, falling by a score of 12-7 on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Bobcats held the Trojans to just 220 yards, and even out-gained Troy 284-220 in the game. However, freshman quarterback Tyler Vitt threw five interceptions while completing 9-of-23 passes for 155 yards in the game.

One of Vitt's completions came in the fourth quarter when he hit Mason Hays for a 38-yard strike to set up a three-yard touchdown run by Anthony D. Taylor. Chris Kessler kicked the extra-point to pull Texas State to within 12-7 with 9:03 left to play.

The Bobcats had one last chance on offense with 5:23 left to play when they started their final drive in the game at their own 14-yard line. Vitt ran for 18 yards to Texas State's 34-yard line.  After Taylor was thrown for a five yard loss, VItt threw an incomplete pass and was sacked for a four-yard loss, forcing a punt.

Despite giving up five turnovers in the first half, the Bobcats trailed just 9-0 at halftime. Troy scored their first three points in the first quarter when Tyler Sumpter kicked a 36-yard field goal. The Trojans had driven to Texas State's five-yard line before losing 14 yards on a fumble when Sawyer Smith's pitch to B.J. Smith was wide on third down. That forced Troy to settle for the field goal.

In the second quarter, the Bobcats outgained the Trojans 101-27 total yards, but was unable to capitalize as Troy was able to extend its lead to 9-0 on a pair of field goals by Sumpter.

The first field goal was from 47-yards after the Trojans took over at their 43-yard line following a 55-yard punt by Clayton Stewart and a 12-yard return by Terence Dunlap. The Trojans drove to Texas State's 30-yard line, but the Bobcat defense stiffened and held Smith to no gain on third down, forcing Sumpter to kick a 47-yard field goal.

The second field goal came after Vitt's pass was intercepted at Troy's 47-yard line. The Trojans were held to a field goal again when Sumpter added a 42-yard kick.

The score remained that way until early in the fourth quarter, before the Trojans kicked their final field goal with 11:46 left in the game before Texas State answered with a touchdown drive of its own with 9:10 left to play.

Texas State will play its final game of the season next Saturday when the Bobcats host Arkansas State at 3 p.m. Nov. 24 at Bobcat Stadium.
