Volleyball caps week with sweep over Panthers

Texas State earns triumph over Georgia State, ups win streak to 11 matches

ATLANTA – The Texas State volleyball team swept Georgia State (25-16, 25-14, 25-21) in Sun Belt Conference action Saturday night inside GSU Sports Arena.

The Bobcats (16-5, 7-0 Sun Belt) earned their 11th victory in a row to equal their longest win streak since 2011, while the Panthers fell to 5-10 overall and 2-3 in league play.

Junior Cheyenne Huskey paced the maroon and gold with 10 kills, while senior Madison Daigle had nine kills and no errors on 12 attacks for a career-high .750 attack percentage. True freshman Emily DeWalt was two kills shy of a triple-double, finishing with 29 assists, 15 digs and eight kills.

No member of the home team managed to reach double-digit kills. Crystal Lee led the way with eight, while Carley Eiken had a team-best 10 assists.

TXST led in kills (48-28), attack percentage (.366-.102), assists (47-27), digs (45-22), and blocks (7-6). GSU led in aces, 3-1.

SET 1
After an early feeling-out period, the Bobcats cruised to a 25-16 opening-set triumph. They doubled up the Panthers at 12-6 and later at 16-8 before closing out the nine-point win.

SET 2
Texas State entered intermission leading 2-0 after winning the second 25-14. The visitors again found a 16-8 advantage and scored nine of the final 15 points to end the frame on top.

SET 3
Georgia State put up a valiant effort in the third but would eventually cede the match at 25-21. The two sides played to five ties in the opening moments of the set before an 8-2 run pushed Texas State ahead 16-10. The Bobcats led 20-13 at one point, but the Panthers surged back to close the gap at 23-21. That would be where they ran out of steam, however, as a service error and an attack error ended the night in favor of the maroon and gold.

TXST has now won seven-consecutive matches over GSU and is 10-2 all-time in the series.

Texas State returns to Strahan Arena for a big upcoming weekend. The maroon and gold will first host Appalachian State at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 12 before welcoming two-time defending Sun Belt champion Coastal Carolina at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 13. The Mountaineers (12-5, 4-1) and Chanticleers (4-7, 3-0) are both sitting atop the East Division.
