SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State Head Football Coach
Everett Withers announced Thursday that
Brett Elliott will replace
Zak Kuhr in calling the offensive plays for the Bobcats.
"
Brett Elliott has been given the responsibilities of calling the offensive game plan for Texas State football," Withers said. "
Zak Kuhr will remain as running backs coach. He will join the entire offensive staff with the preparation of the offensive game plan this week and the remainder of the 2018 season."
Elliott returned to Texas State as the quarterback coach this year after spending last season in the same capacity at Mississippi State. He called plays for the Bulldogs when they upset Louisville and former Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson, 31-27, in the TaxSlayer Bowl. He was a co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Bobcats in 2016 when Texas State set single game passing records for most completions, most yards and most touchdowns in a game.
Elliott was a co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under Withers at James Madison when the Dukes led the nation in third-down conversion percentage, ranked second among FCS teams in scoring and total offense, and was in the top-10 nationally in several other offensive categories in 2015.
Kuhr is in his second season as running backs coach at Texas State. Last year, he coached a trio of running backs who combined for over 1,200 yards and five touchdowns.
Kuhr was the co-offensive coordinator with Elliott and coached running backs under Withers at James Madison in 2015 after coaching the running backs the previous year. He coached a pair of running backs who combined for over 2,000 yards rushing in 2015. The Dukes also ran for 3,285 yards and 36 touchdowns as a team. In his first season at JMU, the rushing offense amassed over 2,800 yards and 25 touchdowns, which ranked second in the Colonial Athletic Association and 21st in the FCS.
Texas State travels to ULM for a Sun Belt Conference game that kicks off at 6 p.m. on Oct. 20 in Monroe, La. The game will be televised on ESPN3. The Bobcats (1-5, 0-3 in the Sun Belt) are coming off a 15-13 loss against Georgia Southern on Oct. 11, while ULM (3-4, 1-2) enters the game after a 45-20 victory at Coastal Carolina on Oct. 13.
