Bobcats Shutout Panthers 4-0 in Non-Conference Finale

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Three second half goals, two of which came from freshman midfielder Renny Moore, propelled the Texas State soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Prairie View A&M Friday night at the Bobcat Soccer Complex as the Bobcats hosted their second annual Teal Match. It was also the final non-conference match of the season for TXST.

With the victory, the Bobcats improve to 2-3-1 on the season while the Panthers drop to 0-3-0 after playing its first match since Aug. 20.

After the first three shots from TXST all went wide of the net, the team caught a break when PVAMU's goalkeeper was whistled for illegal touching after she fell on the ball, got up with it, dropped the ball on the ground, dribbled towards the top of the penalty box and then picked the ball up again. This gave the Bobcats a rare indirect free kick from inside the 18-yard box.

Kassi Hormuth tapped the ball slightly to her left and Rachel Grout blasted it into the top portion of the net to give TXST a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute. The goal was Grout's 10th of her career while the assist was the 10th in Hormuth's career and placed her one shy of breaking into the program's career top 10.

TXST was able to place two more attempts on goal the rest of the first half with one each coming from Haley Groff and Kira Zapalac. PVAMU saw all three of its shots on goal from distance easily be handled by Heather Martin.

Following a pep talk from head coach Kat Conner, the Bobcats came out more aggressive and focused to start the second half. Hormuth nearly netted her second goal of the season when she got a quick shot off in the box towards the left post in the 51st minute but the keeper made her wait a couple of minutes longer with a diving stop.

Moore tallied her first collegiate goal on a penalty kick early in the 55th minute to extend the lead to 2-0. The kick was awarded after the freshman was taken down in the box while trying to get past a defender. It was the first penalty kick converted by TXST since Serena Hines did so on in the 82nd minute against Grambling on Sept. 25, 2011.

Nearly four minutes later, Grout sent a through ball into the box that Hormuth was able to run onto and slot past the goalkeeper into the lower left corner. The goal was Hormuth's second of the year and 11 in her career while Grout was credited with her team-high third assists and eighth of her career.

Moore closed out the scoring with her second goal of the game halfway through the 61st minute. Jessica Pikoff won a short goal kick and sent the ball forward into the box. Moore beat the center defender and directed the ball into the lower right corner of the net to make it 4-0 in favor of TXST. The assist was Pikoff's second of the season.

The Bobcats outshot the Panthers 17-8 with Kaylee Davis and Hormuth leading the way with three shots each. Also taking multiple cracks at goal were Sydney Kammer, Grout and Moore.

In net, Heather Martin got the start and earned the win to improve to 1-1-1 on the season. She stopped all three shots that PVAMU place on net in the first half. Kathryn Budde saw action in the second half and made two saves.

TXST opens Sun Belt Conference play next Friday on the road against Georgia State with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
