Texas State vs. Colorado
Texas State will play its first road game of the season when the Bobcats travel to Colorado for a non-conference game beginning at 1 p.m. (Central) on Saturday, September 9, at Folsom Field in Boulder, Colo.
The Bobcats enter the game with a 1-0 record after defeating Houston Baptist, 20-11, in their season-opening game at Bobcat Stadium on September 2. Colorado is also 1-0 this season after the Buffaloes beat intrastate rival Colorado State in Denver on Sept. 1.
The Series
This marks the first time that Texas State and Colorado have met and is the first time the Bobcats will play against a team from the Pac-12 Conference. Ironically, both schools are competing in a men's golf tournament at Air Force's Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational this weekend.
This is the second of three first-time opponents that Texas State will face this season after the Bobcat won their first meeting against Houston Baptist last Saturday. The third game will be when the Bobcats play at Coastal Carolina in a Sun Belt Conference game
About Texas State
Texas State is in its 110th season of football and enter the Colorado game with an all-time record of 504-432-26 since 1919 and played in its first game in 1904 against St. Edward's.
The Bobcats are in their sixth season as a NCAA Division I FBS school and fifth year as a member of the Sun Belt Conference in 2017. The Bobcats also played in the WAC during the 2012 campaign.
The Bobcats posted their fourth victory in their last five season-openers with the 20-11 victory against Houston Baptist game. Texas State began that stretch with road wins at Houston in 2012 and Southern Miss in 2013 before beating Arkansas-Pine Bluff in 2014 and falling at No. 10-ranked Florida State in 2015. The Bobcats also won 56-54 in triple overtime at Ohio last season in head coach
Everett Withers' first game at Texas State.
Head coach
Everett Withers enters Saturday's game with a 28-23 career record as a head coach and improved to 4-1 in season-opening games in his career as a head coach. Withers won his first two season-opening games against Houston Baptist and Ohio. He also had a 1-1 record at James Madison when the Dukes defeated Morehead State in 2015 and fell at Maryland in 2014. He also won his first game as a head coach at North Carolina against James Madison.
Texas State's football staff will be one of the 336 college football staffs wearing American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) patches on their shirts to bring awareness of and to promote the association during this weekend's games.
Senior linebacker
Easy Anyama had an impressive season debut when he was named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week after he equaled his career-high of five tackles, recorded the first two quarterback sacks of his career, blocked an extra-point attempt and forced a fumble. Anyama returned to Texas State's lineup against Houston Baptist after sitting out the final games of the 2016 season with an injury.
Junior kicker
James Sherman scored Texas State's first points of the season when he kicked a 25-yard field goal. Sherman also kicked a 26-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to mark the first time in his career that he has kicked two field goals in a game.
Graduate transfer
Damian Williams made his first start for the Bobcats against Houston Baptist. He also scored Texas State's first touchdown of the season with a four-yard run to give the Bobcats a 10-9 halftime lead against Houston Baptist.
Freshman
Anthony Smith also came off the bench for an impressive second half when he rushed for 71 yards on 10 carries. Smith scored a second touchdown when he sprinted around the right end for a 48-yard run.
Up Next
Texas State will open its Sun Belt Conference schedule on September 16 when the Bobcats host defending SBC champion Appalachian State at Bobcat Stadium.
