Soccer Drops Match at Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. – Despite outshooting Coastal Carolina 15-5 and placing seven shots on goal compared to two, the Texas State soccer team fell 1-0 Sunday afternoon at CCU Soccer Stadium.

With the loss, the Bobcats are now 3-4-1 overall and 1-1-0 in Sun Belt Conference play while the Chanticleers improved to 6-3-0 on the season and 1-1-0 in conference action.

Texas State maintained possession in the early part of the first half, taking three shots in the first nine minutes. Two were placed on goal from Rachel Grout and Renny Moore but CCU's Rylee Atteberry made extraordinary stops on both attempts to keep the match scoreless.

Exactly 10 minutes into the contest, Daniella Famili found Kayla Christian open on the right side. She then slotted a shot past a diving Heather Martin to give the Chanticleers a 1-0 advantage.

Kassi Hormuth had a crack at goal just over three minutes later, but her low shot to the left corner was corralled by the diving goalkeeper.

Another opportunity to tie the match for the Bobcats came in the 26th minute. Running down the left side, Hormuth sent a centering pass towards the penalty spot for Kaylee Davis. However, Atteberry was just slightly faster to the ball to prevent a TXST crack at goal.

Jordan Kondikoff had the first shot of the second half but her attempt deflected off the outside of the right post for a goal kick in the 47th minute.

Hormuth ripped a shot from the right wing near the end of the 57th minute. Again CCU's keeper made a diving save to punch the ball away and keep the Bobcats off the scoreboard.

Early in the 67th minute, Hormuth sent in a cross from the right side that Atteberry punched out but it bounced off a Chanticleer defender. The ball landed at the feet of Davis but her attempt clanked off the crossbar and back into play away from the net.

Chandler Cooney came up big to keep TXST within a goal during the 74th minute. The Chanticleer sent in a cross that landed at the feet of Elisabeth Rockhill. Cooney made a sliding tackle to knock the ball away from Rockhill and cleared out of danger by Cameron Hart.

The last opportunity on goal for Texas State came late in the 83rd minute. Moore received a pass on the right wing with no defender around her and took aim at the top left portion of the goal. Unfortunately, a leaping save prevented a Bobcat goal that would have tied the match.

Kira Zapalac and Hormuth both took a match-high three shots apiece. Taking two shot attempts each were Davis, Grout and Moore.

Martin made one save, coming in the first half, between the posts.

Texas State returns home to take on Georgia Southern at 7 p.m. on Friday.
