SHREVEPORT, La. – With the clocking ticking down in the second overtime period,
Rachel Grout sent a shot into the lower left corner of the net with 28 seconds remaining to give the Texas State soccer team a 3-2 double overtime victory over Northwestern State Friday night at Byrd High Stadium. The victory snapped an eight-match winless streak that dated back to last season.
Â
The Bobcats improved its record to 1-2-1 and extended its undefeated streak to 11 matches over the Lady Demons, who dropped to 2-2 on the season.
Â
Before TXST allowed NSU to take a shot in the first half, the Bobcats got off five attempts. Unfortunately, only one was placed on goal when
Kaylee Davis had one of her career-high seven shots stopped by the Lady Demons' Alex Latham in the 37th minute.
Â
TXST scored the first goal of the contest late in the 42nd minute when
Jordan Kondikoff found
Sydney Kammer, who finished near the corner of the box. It was Kammer's first career goal and the first assist of the year for Kondikoff.
Â
Early in the 54th minute,
Kira Zapalac stole a ball from defender and ripped a shot into the lower left corner of the net from the top of the box to extend the Bobcats' lead to 2-0. For the senior, it was her first goal of her career since the 2015 season.
Â
It appeared that TXST was on its way to a shutout victory until a shot from NSU's Gabriella Gamboa was accidentally knocked into the net on a clearance attempt by a Bobcat defender to cut the lead in half with just under 13 minutes left on the clock.
Â
Gamboa went on to score halfway through the 81st minute on a deep shot after receiving the ball from Cache Haley to tie the match.
Â
The Bobcats had three good looks during the rest of regulation. Davis put two shots on net and
Renny Moore took a crack at goal but the ball went wide of the post.
Â
After neither team recorded a shot in the first extra period, TXST got three attempts off in the first five minutes of the second overtime. Two were blocked and Davis saw her fourth shot of the day be stopped by Latham.
Â
Grout scored the match-winning goal after getting the ball on a pass from Kondikoff. It was Grout's ninth career goal and fifth time she has scored the contest winner. The assist for Kondikoff was her second of the match.
Â
Overall, the Bobcats outshot NSU 23-10 and held a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal. Along with Davis' game-high seven attempts,
Kassi Hormuth,
Genesis Turman and Kammer all took three shots apiece.
Â
Kathryn Budde made her second straight start between the posts. The sophomore did not make a save as only two of the 10 shots from the Lady Demons were on goal.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats is a 1 p.m. match at Stephen F. Austin on Sunday. The contest will take place at the turf field at Nacogdoches High School.
