SAN MARCOS, Texas - After laying the groundwork for the first quarter of its 2017 season, the Texas State football team concluded its fall camp with a scripted scrimmage on Friday morning.
"I thought we built a foundation that we started back in June when most of our team reported," Texas State head coach
Everett Withers said. "Our objective was to try and get prepared so we have a solid foundation for the first four weeks of our season. I thought we were able to do that and we stayed relatively healthy for the most part."
Withers and his team faced the challenge of a new schedule for preseason camp after the NCAA eliminated two-a-day practices and added four additional practices in fall camp. He was pleased with how his team responded to those challenges.
"I thought this was a positive camp," Withers said. "I really enjoyed the way the kids worked daily. We had very few lulls. It's a young team so every day is going to be a challenge for them, but I felt they handled the camp well."
One area in which Withers felt the Bobcats improved upon was their accountability as a football team.
"One of the biggest issues was having the guys buy in and being accountable for everything that goes with it," Withers said. "I feel like we did that really well."
Texas State opens its 2017 season against Houston Baptist on September 2 at Bobcat Stadium. The game kicks off at 6 p.m. and is the first of six home games this season.
