SAN MARCOS, Texas – For Texas State head football coach
Everett Withers, it will be a chance to see his team perform for the final time this spring. It also is an opportunity for Texas State football fans to see some of their former stars play in a T-Association seven-on-seven flag football tournament and watch the current Bobcats perform in the annual Maroon-Gold Spring Game on Saturday, April 15, at Bobcat Stadium.
Â
The tournament begins at 9 a.m. with former Bobcat quarterbacks Barrick Nealy, Bradley George and Frank Rutherford leading different teams. In addition, the tournament includes former Bobcat players such as Cyril Adkins, Kyle Harrell, Terrence Hatton, Nate Langford, Randy Moshier, Walter Musgrove, David Simmons, Andy Erickson, K.R. Carpenter, Damian Chandler, Donavan King, Isaiah Battle, Da'Marcus Griggs, Terrence Franks, Darren Dillard and Aaron Matthews to name a few.
Â
After the tournament concludes, Texas State will play its annual Maroon-Gold Spring Game beginning at 11 a.m. This will give Withers and his coaching staff a chance to watch the offense battle against the defense in various individual drills, a small-group gauntlet and in several simulated game-like conditions.
Â
The game concludes Texas State's spring practice in which the Bobcats have spent the last week of practice scrimmaging in different game situations.
Â
"We have a young team who hasn't played a lot of snaps," Withers said. "The only way for them to get better is to put them in game-like situations in scrimmages."
Â
The defense will be led by All-Sun Belt honorees
Bryan London,
Gabe Loyd and
Jordan Mittie. They are joined by defensive ends
Ishmael Davis and
Dean Taylor, safety
Quinn Tiggs, and redshirt freshmen cornerbacks
Anthony J. Taylor,
Jashon Waddy and
Jordan Eastling.
A.J. Krawczyk also has seen action at safety.
Â
The offense will feature three returning starters on the offensive line in
Aaron Brewer,
Tryston Mizerak and
Jacob Rowland. In addition, redshirt freshmen
Robert Brown, Jr. and
Anthony D. Taylor will see plenty of action at running back.
Gabe Schrade returns as the starting tight end and
Tyler Watts headlines the wide receivers after leading the Bobcats in receptions last season.
Â
Graduate transfer
Damian Williams has taken over at quarterback this spring, but he will be competing against a talented trio of freshmen in fall camp for the starting position.
Â
"Damian doesn't know all of the reads and doesn't have total command of the (offense) yet, but he has the physical tools and is a competitor," Withers said.
Â
Williams has shown the ability to throw the ball deep accurately this spring. He also has demonstrated that he can thread it into tight spaces as well.
Â
The Bobcats open the 2017 season on Sept. 2 against Houston Baptist and also play home games against defending Sun Belt Conference champion Appalachian State on Sept. 16, I-35 rival UTSA on Sept. 23, ULM on Oct. 7, New Mexico State on Nov. 4 and Georgia State on Nov. 11.
