Bobcats’ Season Ends in CIT Quarterfinals

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State men's basketball team saw its season come to an end Saturday afternoon in Strahan Coliseum in a 49-44 loss against Saint Peter's in the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.

The Bobcats ended the year with a 22-14 record while the Peacocks improved to 21-13.

Texas State scored the first 14 points of the game that was capped off by three free throws from Nijal Pearson. SPU did not tally its first points until 11:04 left in the opening stanza on a layup from Antwon Portley. During the run Bobby Conley scored five points.

A layup from Conley with 7:50 on the clock extended the Bobcats' advantage to 23-6 and saw the Peacocks call their third timeout of the contest. Those would be the final points for Texas State the rest of the half as the Peacocks ended the half on a 17-0 run to send the game into halftime tied.

The scoreless streak final came to an end when Pearson converted two free throws at the 17:50 mark of the second half. It was the Bobcats' first points in exactly 10 minutes.

A jumper from Ojai Black was followed by a three-pointer from the right corner courtesy of Deris Duncan and two Conley free throws increased the lead to 34-28.

After Conley knocked down two free throws to increase the Texas State advantage to seven with 10:19 to play, the Peacocks went on a 9-0 run to take their first lead of the game. Nedeljko Prijovic made a midair adjustment to get a layup to drop to snap the TXST scoring drought.

Kavin Gilder-Tilbury was fouled on a three-point attempt and knocked down two at the charity stripe to tie the game 40-40.  SPU went on to score nine of the next 11 points to seal its win.

Conley scored the final points of the season for Texas State with a layup with 3.9 remaining on the clock.

The only Bobcat to reach double-figures was Conley with 13 points behind 4-of-8 shooting and converting all four of his free throw attempts. He also finished with five rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Black led all players with five assists. For the season, the Killeen, Texas native finished with 144 assists that ranks ninth in program history. His 287 career dimes are the seventh most ever by a Bobcat. Black also blocked a career-high two shots in his final collegiate contest.

Pearson added nine points and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds. The freshman was credited with three steals and two assists. Also finished with three steals was Prijovic.

Immanuel King finished with five points, seven rebounds and two blocks but was limited to 17 minutes because of foul trouble. His 38 rejections this year is tied for the sixth most in a single-season in school history with Jeff Foster (1996-97) and Melih Yavsaner (2000-01).

Gilder-Tilbury netted six points in his final collegiate game to give him 573 this season, 10th most ever by a Texas State player. He ends his four-year career as the program's all-time leader in games played (128), three-point attempts (451) and tied for the most games started (99). The Houston native scored 1,385 points in a Bobcat uniform to place him sixth in program history.
