SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Texas State suffered a 3-2 setback to New Mexico on Sunday in the squad's final game of the UTSA Classic.
Â
A two-run home run by New Mexico's Jasmine Casados in the third inning proved to be the difference as the Lobos scored three runs on seven hits, while holding the Bobcats to two runs on three hits.
Â
UNM's Tess McPherson (3-3) earned the win in the circle, going 4.2 scoreless innings in relief. Texas State's
Jodi Paige Williams (3-2) was charged with the loss, allowing all three Lobo runs on five hits in her 4.2 innings of work.
Â
Kimberlin Naivar,
Jaelyn Young and
Taylor Webb each hit safely to lead the Bobcats, while Shelbie Franc and Callie McGarrigle paced the Lobos with two hits each.
Â
Texas State took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with RBI from Young and
Haleigh Davis. Naivar led off with a double to center, advanced to third on a sac bunt by
Ariel Ortiz and scored on Yong's single to left. After a walk by Webb, Davis drove in her third run of the season with a ground ball back to the pitcher.
Â
UNM got a run back in the second as McGarrigle homered to right to lead off the frame. Williams responded by striking out the side to keep the Bobcats in front 2-1.
Â
Casados spotted the Lobos the 3-2 lead in the third with her two-run blast to left-center field. D'Andra DeFlora singled through the left side with two outs and Casados followed two pitches later with her second home run of the season. Texas State threatened in the bottom of the inning, putting runners on second and third with one out. However, UNM went to McPherson out of the bullpen to escape the jam and preserve the lead.
Â
Neither team advanced a runner past first in the next two innings until the Lobos put runners on the corners with two out in the sixth. However, TXST's
Quincy Charleston got Angelica Lujan to ground out to second to end the threat.
Â
The Bobcats went down in order in both the sixth and seventh as UNM held on for the 3-2 win.
