Bobcats Prey On Panthers, 84-57

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State women's basketball team handled its Saturday afternoon matchup with the Prairie View A&M Panthers, winning by a score of 84-57 inside of Strahan Coliseum.

"It was excellent to see our team bounce back the way they did today against a tough opponent in Prairie View," said head coach Zenarae Antoine. "I am not going to lie, that game on Tuesday night was eating at me all the way up until tip today. Our girls showed a lot of grit to come out and play the way they did today."

Texas State (5-2) showed tremendous balance in the contest with four players reaching double-figure scoring. Ti'Aira Pitts led the way for the Bobcats, posting a career-high 18 points in only 12 minutes of game action. She connected on 8-of-13 shots, including a pair of treys. Pitts was featured early and often in the offensive attack this afternoon as she scored the first seven points of the game for the Bobcats. Prairie View (2-5) had no answer for the senior forward in the paint. The high-low action of Taeler Deer and Pitts gave the Panthers fits all afternoon. Deer dropped several passes over any Panther defender attempting to front Pitts in the post, Pitts would create space for herself on the catch and finish, uncontested, at the rim.

After a tough shooting performance in the last game, Toshua Leavitt rebounded nicely to chip in 17 points. She connected on three more 3-pointers, adding to her season-long streak of games with at least two made shots from deep. Leavitt also swished all three of her free throws, making her a perfect 11-of-11 from the line this season.

Senior guard Taeler Deer also recovered from an off night against the Houston Cougars to score an efficient 15 points. Deer cashed in on 5-of-6 shots and made all four attempts from the charity stripe. Once again, she was a willing and able passer, dishing out eight helpers. The Sun Belt Conference assist leader has led the team in dimes in six games this season.

Rounding out the double-figure scorers was Brooke Holle. After seeing her scoring numbers dip in each of the last two contests, Holle was able to get back on track against PVAMU. The sophomore guard chipped in 10 points while grabbing a career-best seven rebounds. She also drew a charge in the contest.

The bench, which outscored the Panthers by a 20-6 count, was led by graduate transfer Zelor Massaquoi. In 25 minutes of action she scored nine points while ripping down a team-high eight boards. Chania Wright and Zandra Emanuel each tallied four points off of the Bobcat bench. All 11 available Bobcats saw at least seven minutes of playing time and 10 players scored in the contest.

On top of outdoing PVAMU in bench scoring, the Bobcats also bested the Panthers in second chance points (21-10), points in the paint (38-34) and thoroughly dominated the glass (53-29). TXST pulled down as many offensive rebounds, 18, as PVAMU had defensive rebounds.

Texas State will conclude its four-game home stand on Dec. 5 with a showdown against UTSA. The I-35 rivalry game will tip at 7:00 p.m. from the Strahan Coliseum.
