SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State women's basketball team (6-2) dismantled archrival UTSA (2-7), 91-38, on Tuesday night inside Strahan Coliseum. The 53-point triumph tied the largest win by the Bobcats over the Roadrunners, matching a TXST victory on Feb. 13, 1993. The game marks the largest victory by a Bobcat team since a 54-point thrashing of Houston-Tillotson on Dec. 29, 2007. The final from that contest was 111-57 in favor of TXST.
"It is a great day to be a Bobcat," said head coach
Zenarae Antoine. "I am especially happy for our seniors. Going out on top in a rivalry is a big deal. These young women worked really hard for this and deserved this outcome. It was very special for me to be able to close out the game with our five seniors on the court at the same time."
Brooke Holle started the game with a bang for the Bobcats, dropping in the team's first nine points of the opening quarter. In total, she tallied 14 of the 18 points scored by TXST in the first frame. After the initial 10 minutes of play, Texas State held a narrow 18-15 advantage.
To start the second quarter, the Bobcats exploded on a 12-2 run. Within the run, junior guard
Toshua Leavitt found her range, knocking down a pair of triples. The extended run forced UTSA to burn a quick timeout in the second quarter, but the damage was already done. The Bobcats outscored the Roadrunners 24-8 in the second quarter, blowing the game wide open.
The third quarter was no different as the Bobcats caught fire from behind the arc. Once again, TXST surged well ahead of UTSA, scoring 30 points in the third compared to just eight for the visiting team. After yielding 15 points in the first quarter, the Bobcat defense locking in and did not allow the Roadrunners to top 10 points in another quarter. Over the last 30 minutes of action, UTSA only scored 23 points on 9-of-44 from the floor.
Holle closed the game with a career-high 24 points. She knocked down 8-of-11 shots, including 4-of-6 from 3-point land. She also ripped down five rebounds in 26 minutes of action. Holle's big game marked the fifth time this season that a Bobcat topped 20 points in a game, and was the first of Holle's career. Her previous high-mark was 17 points, scored in the season-opening win over Texas Tech.
Three other starters hit double figure scoring on the evening. Leavitt tallied 16 points, four rebounds and four assists in 23 minutes. Senior forwards
Ericka May and
Ti'Aira Pitts scored 10 and 12 points, respectively, while nabbing eight boards.
On the night, the Bobcats blistered the nets from beyond the 3-point line, hitting 15-of-30 shots from deep. The 15 made triples established a new school-record, eclipsing the previous mark of 14, a mark achieved three times.
Freshman guard
Chania Wright led the Bobcat bench mob, pouring in a career-best 16 points. Wright connected on 5-of-7 shots, all from behind the arc, grabbed three rebounds and dished out a pair of assists. Texas State's bench dominated the UTSA bench, 23-9.
Texas State will not be back on the court until Dec. 17 with a road game against the Sam Houston State Bearkats. Tip is scheduled for 3 p.m. inside the Johnson Coliseum in Huntsville, Texas. The game starts another long stretch away from home, as the Bobcats play five straight games on the road. TXST's next home game will be a Sun Belt Conference clash with the South Alabama Jaguars on Jan. 4 at 5:30 p.m.
