JONESBORO, Ark. – Despite a pair of touchdowns by
Anthony D. Taylor, the Texas State football team couldn't overcome some costly mistakes as the Bobcats suffered a 30-12 loss at Arkansas State on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Bobcats took an early 6-0 lead when they opened the game with a touchdown drive for the fourth straight game. Texas State scored its touchdown on
Anthony D. Taylor's five-yard run with 11:42 left to play in the opening quarter.
Foster Hilborn missed the extra point attempt while kicking into a 24-mph wind. Taylor's touchdown capped off a 75-yard, 12-play drive by the Bobcats.
Â
But after holding Arkansas State to a 39-yard field goal by Sawyer Williams, Texas State's
Jeremiah Haydel fumbled the ensuing kickoff at Texas State's 24-yard line to set up the first touchdown for the Red Wolves.
Â
Warren Wand scored the touchdown as he accounted for all 24 yards on three separate runs, the last play being a one-yard TD run. Williams added the extra point to give the Red Wolves a 10-6 lead.
Â
Facing a fourth down and two play on Arkansas State's 46-yard line, the ball was mishandled and Arkansas State took possession and drove down the field for another touchdown. This one came when quarterback Justice Hansen scored on a one-yard quarterback keeper. Williams missed the extra point to make the score 16-6.
Â
The Bobcats gained some momentum early in the second half when the Bobcat defense held Arkansas State on a fourth-down and four-play at their own 14-yard line.
Â
Then, Robert Brown had a career-long 71-yard run to Arkansas State's 12-yard line, to set up a touchdown pass from
Damian Williams to
Anthony D. Taylor. The extra point was blocked, but the Bobcats had pulled to within 16-12 with 10:51 left in the third quarter.
Â
Arkansas State answered with a touchdown drive of its own when the Red Wolves gained possession on Texas State's 21-yard line after
Marcus Ripley tried to run on a fourth-down and five play. ASU scored when Hansen ran one yard for the TD and Williams added the extra point to make the score 23-12.
Â
The Red Wolves increased their lead to 30-12 when they took possession at Texas State's 49-yard line and drove down for a touchdown when Hansen threw a 12-yard TD pass to Kendrick Edwards and Williams added the extra point.
Â
The loss drops Texas State's record to 2-9 overall and 1-6 in Sun Belt Conference games this season. The Bobcats will close out the 2017 season on Friday, Nov. 24, when the Bobcats travel to Troy for a game that begins at 2 p.m.
