TROY, Ala. – In a game that was not in doubt after the opening quarter, the Texas State football team closed out its 2017 season with a loss at the hand of the Troy Trojans, 62-9, on Friday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Troy (9-2, 6-1 SBC) jumped out to a 17-0 lead after the opening quarter to put Texas State (2-10, 1-7 SBC) away early. The Bobcats would go on to surrender a season-highs of 41 first half points and 62 total points.
Troy stormed out of the gate to the tune of a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Brandon Silvers threw a pair of touchdown passes. His first TD pass was on a 10-yard toss to Tevaris McCormick on a screen to the left side. Then, he threw an 11-yard TD pass to Sam Letton on the following drive.
In the second quarter, the Bobcats appeared to gain some momentum when
Jordan Mittie blocked a 37-yard field goal attempt by Tyler Sumpter.
The Bobcat offense picked up their initial first down when
Caleb Twyford gained seven yards on a reverse. Then, Willie Jones, III completed a seven-yard pass to
Elijah King. After Jones gained four yards on the next play,
Damian Williams threw a lateral pass to him and he gained 10 more yards to Texas State's 48-yard line. Williams also completed a 12-yard pass to
Elijah King for 12 yards. Jones rushed up the middle for 15 more yards to Troy's 25-yard line. However, Texas State was penalized for holding and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that put the ball at its own 43-yard line. That forced the Bobcats to punt the ball away.
The Trojans scored another TD with 3:57 left in the half when Silvers hit Tray Eafford for a 43-yard TD pass. On Troy's next possession, Silvers completed a 19-yard pass to Clark Quissenberry and Jordan Chun added another TD, this one on a 43-yard scamper. Sumpter kicked a 24-yard field goal as time ran out in the first half to give the Trojans a 41-0 lead at the break.
The Bobcats scored their first points in the game when they drove 76 yards in eight plays in the third quarter. Williams began the drive with a seven-yard run. Then, he completed a 12-yard pass to
Tyler Watts and after a pair of runs by
Anthony Smith for 13 yards, he completed a 37-yard pass to
Elijah King to Troy's three-yard line. Finally, Williams scored a touchdown with a run behind left tackle
Aaron Brewer to give the Bobcats six points. However, the point after attempt by
James Sherman was blocked.
Troy added a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter when Kaleb Barker scored on a four-yard run and threw a 59-yard pass to Richard Hallman to give the Trojans a 55-6 lead at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Trojans added another TD on a seven-yard run by B.J. Smith.
The Bobcats answered when they drove down to Troy's 13-yard line to set up a 30-yard field goal by
Gavin Graham for the final points in the game.
