Bobcats Drop Heartbreaker in 2OT to Chanticleers

FOLEY, Ala. – An unlucky bounce halfway through the second overtime period ended the Texas State soccer team's season in heartbreaking fashion in the Sun Belt Conference quarterfinals. The Bobcats fell 2-1 at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex Wednesday evening.

TXST ends its season 10-6-1 overall while the Chanticleers are now 10-7-1.

Coming out aggressive on the opening kickoff, the Bobcats controlled possession for the early part of the match, Kassi Hormuth found the back of the net three seconds into the fifth minute. The SBC Offensive Player of the Year knocked the ball in after a scrum in front of the net between Sydney Kammer and two CCU defenders.

The defense held the Chanticleers without a shot on goal until halfway through the 20 minute. The save by Heather Martin was the 116th in her career, tying her for sixth on the career list with assistant coach Lauren Frazier.

CCU controlled most of the possession for the remaining portion of the half. The Bobcats had chances but were only able to get off one shot attempt. The Chanticleers were able to place one more shot on goal in the 39th minute. The attempt went right to Martin for her second of the contest and surpassing Frazier on the career list.

In the 71st minute, CCU's Lauren Dabner knocked in a free ball that landed at her feet near the penalty spot to tie the match 1-1.

The Bobcats had chances to go back on top. The first came from Hormuth in the 80th minute but the goalkeeper made a diving stop to prevent a score.

Renny Moore was able to draw a foul from a CCU defender with eight seconds left on the clock and around 25 yards from goal just off the left center of goal. However, the ref decided not to stop the clock and allowing the final few seconds to tick off and send the match into overtime.

A little over a minute was left to play in the first overtime period when the Chanticleers were called for a foul on the right side just outside of the penalty box for a short free kick. Rachel Grout sent the ball into the box towards goal and Alyssa Phelan got her foot on the it, but her attempt was blocked by a defender and cleared away.

In the 103rd minute, Chandler Cooney made a last ditch diving save to prevent an 1-on-1 opportunity with Martin.

The Chanticleers sent in another long ball a little over two minutes later. Martin came out made a diving attempt to corral the ball. However, the ball deflected off her, deflected off of Mackenzie Gibbs towards the goal. Cooney made a last ditch effort slide to prevent the ball from crossing the goal line but was too late as the Bobcats' season came to an end in heartbreaking fashion.

Hormuth led the Bobcats with three shots and placed two on goal. Grout was the only other TXST player with multiple attempts with two.
