Bobcats and Cardinal Play to 1-1 Exhibition Draw

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Texas State women's soccer played Incarnate Word to a 1-1 draw Friday night at Tom and Gayle Benson Stadium in an exhibition contest. Senior Clarissa Leon scored the Bobcats only goal in the 81st minute after the Bobcats fell behind early in the second half.

The Bobcats had multiple chances in the first half to find the back of the net, however Sydney Huntsinger, the Cardinals goalkeeper, came up with multiple big saves to keep the game scoreless in the first half. Lauren Prater had three opportunities but all were stopped, two of them via kick saves.

In the 41st minute, UIW was called for a foul that gave Texas State a free kick from 15 yards out. The shot by Kassi Hormuth unfortunately sailed over the crossbar.

The Cardinals struck first late in the 50th minute following a Bobcat turnover at the top of the box. Allyssa Amaya was able to send a shot over the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Heather Martin into the upper right corner of the net.

After multiple chances Texas State finally had a breakthrough with a little under nine minutes left in the game. Hormuth ripped a shot from the right side nine yards out that the keeper was unable to successfully clear. Clarissa Leon right there to knock it past the goal line to tie the score at 1-1.

Maddie Nichols nearly scored the game-winning goal with less than a minute to play. She got her foot on the ball after a bad clearance by the Cardinals on a corner kick. Her shot rolled past the keeper but a UIW defender got her foot on the ball to clear it away from the net.

Jordan Kondikoff and Prater both attempted a game-high four shots with Prater putting three on goal. Both Hormuth and Leon were the only other players to attempt more than one shot with three apiece.

Between the posts, Kathryn Budde, Heather Martin and Maddi Nordstrom all played about 30 minutes. Nordstrom made the lone save among the trio in the first half.

For UIW, Nikki Popa attempted a team best two shots and Huntslinger made nine saves.

Texas State opens the regular season on Friday at Lamar. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the LU Soccer Complex.
