SAN MARCOS, Texas – The All Sports Association in Fort Walton Beach, Florida announced that Texas State senior offensive guard
Felix Romero is one of 88 players to be considered for the 2016 Wuerffel Trophy.
The Wuerffel Trophy is named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel and is given annually to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
Romero is an Austin native and a three-year starter as a guard for the Bobcats. Last season, he was leading the team in knockdowns through the first four games with 27 before suffering a season-ending knee injury. He also had the team's highest total in each contest. Romero made nine starts and ranked second among team leaders with 57 knockdowns as sophomore in 2014 after beginning his career with 33 as redshirt freshman.
A member of the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll, Romero is pursuing a master's degree in legal studies after earning his bachelor's degree in criminal justice. He was on the Texas State Dean's List for the fall and spring semesters in 2015-16 and received the Oak Farms Dairy "Cream of the Crop" award after maintaining a 4.0 grade point average throughout the year. He also was awarded the Outstanding Male Athlete Postgraduate Scholarship, which is awarded to recognize outstanding academic achievement and potential for success in postgraduate study.
In addition, Romero is active in the San Marcos community, where he is part of a PAL (Peer Assistance and Leadership) mentorship program and various reading programs at elementary schools. He also represented Texas State Athletics with the City of San Marcos on a new River Conservation program by helping to create a video that educated residents about the delicate San Marcos river ecosystem. The video is scheduled to run in local businesses surrounding the river for the next five years. He also assisted with a restoration program for Dunbar Gardens next to the San Marcos Tourist Information.
