No. 20 UL Lafayette Outlasts Bobcats

Bobcats Fall, 1-0, to Drop Series

LAFAYETTE, La. – For the second game in a row, a bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning decided the game. Unfortunately for Texas State, that run came against the Bobcats on Sunday as they dropped to No. 20 UL Lafayette, 1-0, to fall to 22-19 on the season and 10-8 in Sun Belt Conference play.

The game was a defensive battle that hinged on just a few plays. Jonathan Hennigan was impressive in his first weekend start since the UL Monroe series, striking out four and only giving up three hits without a run in six innings of work.

Texas State put four hits on the board against the Ragin' Cajuns, outhitting them, 4-3. The Bobcats fall to 18-6 on the season when outhitting an opponent.

The best opportunity for Texas State to score came in the fourth inning when the Bobcats loaded the bases with just one out. But a strikeout and fly out ended the scoring opportunity. Other than that, the Bobcats only left two other runners on base in the game.

Five times the Bobcats forced ULL to leave runners in scoring position throughout the game, including bases loaded in the seventh, limiting them to one run in the inning after Pasquale Mazzoccoli struck out a batter for the last out of the inning.

Before Mazzoccoli's strikeout though, the Bobcats walked four consecutive batters with two outs to plate the only run of the game.

The Bobcats will look to rebound at Texas at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

WHO STOOD OUT
22901Jonathan Hennigan / RHP / Junior / Center, Texas
The junior went six full innings without giving up a run. He only allowed three hits in the start and struck out four. He threw 60 strikes on 102 pitches and forced seven groundouts and six fly outs in his first weekend start since UL Monroe on March 13. He left the game tied, 0-0.

22905Tanner Hill / C / Senior / San Marcos, Texas
Hill was 2-for-4 to lead the team from the plate. He struck a hit with two outs in the ninth inning to keep the Bobcats alive and played much of the game after taking a blow to the head on a collision for a foul ball.

SCORING RECAP
  • Bottom 7th – Three walks with two outs loaded the bases for UL Lafayette. A fourth consecutive walk brought in the first run of the game to put ULL up, 1-0. (1 run, 0 hits, 0 errors, 3 left on base)

NOTES
  • Jonathan Hennigan made his first weekend start on the mound since March 13 against UL Monroe.
  • Nick Perez made his third start of the season at designated hitter.
  • With his walk in the top of the third, Jacob Almendarez made it two walks in as many games. He drew a bases-loaded walk in Saturday's game. The walk also makes it three consecutive games in which he has reached base.
  • Granger Studdard drew his Sun Belt-leading 32nd walk of the season in the fourth inning.
  • Texas State walked four batters in the bottom of the seventh, which was more walks than the pitching staff gave up in the first two games of the series combined.
  • The Bobcats fell to 18-6 on the season when outhitting an opponent.

NEXT UP
Texas State travels to Austin for this week's midweek game at Texas at 6 p.m. Tuesday. After that, the Bobcats will host Troy for a Sun Belt Conference series over the weekend.
