SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State finished the weekend with a 5-4 series finale victory to complete the sweep of Incarnate Word on Sunday. The Bobcats took a 5-1 lead to the seventh inning and let the Cardinals make it interesting with three combined runs in the final three innings, but held on in the end to improve to 8-4 on the year.
Â
Tanner Hill followed up his 4-for-5 Saturday with a three-RBI day on Sunday, knocking his fourth home run of the season. Meanwhile,
Dylan Paul rewarded the
Bobcats for putting him in the starting lineup with a 2-for-3 performance, scoring once and knocking in an RBI.
Luke Sherley and
Derek Scheible both finished 2-for-4 with two other Bobcats tallying hits in the game.
Â
Jonathan Hennigan earned his second win of the season with three strikeouts, three hits and one earned run in five innings.
Pasquale Mazzoccoli came in for the save with two strikeouts in the ninth inning while
Cory Geisler made his first appearance of the season, only allowing one hit in the eighth inning.
Â
The Bobcats wasted no time scoring in the third game of the series against Incarnate Word. Sherley knocked a single to centerfield, and two batters later, Hill sent out his fourth home run of the season to put Texas State on top, 2-0, early.
Â
Texas State kept it going in the second inning to go up, 3-0. Paul, getting his first start of the season, blasted a triple to right centerfield. He was able to score two batters later when Scheible ran out an Incarnate Word error.
Â
After Incarnate Word scored a run in the fifth inning, the Bobcats answered with one of their own in the sixth. Sherley started the inning with a base hit up the middle, and
Granger Studdard moved him to third base with a ground-rule double to left field. Hill was able to plate Sherley from third base with a sacrifice fly to put Texas State up, 4-1. Paul kept the inning going with his second hit of the day, a single to right center to bring in Studdard and push the lead to 5-1. It proved to be the run Texas State needed to secure the victory.
Â
The Cardinals were able to score three combined runs in the seventh and ninth innings to pull within a run of the Bobcats. They scored two in the seventh, bringing in the first run on a single and a double. After a groundout, another single plated the third run of the game for Incarnate Word.
Â
In the ninth, Mazzoccoli started quick, forcing a groundout and striking out the next batter. After that, though, a walk and a double put two runners in scoring position for Incarnate Word. The lead runner would score on a wild pitch, but Mazzoccoli rebounded to strike out the next batter to clinch the game.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats will be at Baylor at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday before heading to UL Monroe for the first Sun Belt Conference series of the season.
