SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State's starter
Cory Geisler pitched an outstanding game on Saturday, but it would not be enough for the Bobcats to pull out the victory. Leading 2-0 most of the game, Texas State allowed South Alabama two runs in the eighth to tie and one in the 11
th to win while failing to score with bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the 10
th. The Jaguars complete the sweep with the 3-2 victory while the Bobcats drop to 15-9 overall and 6-3 in the Sun Belt Conference.
Â
Geisler did not allow a hit through five innings, and the defense only allowed a single base runner through those first five innings on an error. He started the sixth with back-to-back strikeouts before South Alabama was finally able to break the no-hitter. Geisler finished with seven strikeouts and only three hits and two walks in 7.2 innings.
Â
But with two outs in the seventh, a walk and a single put two runners on for South Alabama. The Jaguars followed that with a double from catcher Jared Barnes to plate both runners and tie the game.
Â
Texas State knocked a hit and put a second runner on base with a walk in the eighth inning to try to respond, but a fly out ended the inning. The Bobcats' next best opportunity to score came in the 10
th when they loaded the bases.
Mickey Scott drew a leadoff walk to start the Bobcats off and used his speed to outrun the throw on a sacrifice bunt attempt from
Jonathan Ortega. With both men on base safely, the Bobcats tried another sac bunt, but the USA pitcher booted the ball and Texas State had the bases loaded.
Â
South Alabama would have to retire the heart of the Texas State lineup:
Granger Studdard,
Tanner Hill and
Theodore Hoffman to stay alive. South Alabama's Shane McKinley struck Studdard out, forced a fly out and the Jaguars threw the runner at third out on a fielder's choice to hold Texas State without a run.
Â
In the 11
th inning, the Jaguars hit back-to-back singles and scored two batters later on another single through the left side. Texas State would only draw a walk in the bottom of the inning to clinch it for South Alabama.
Â
Both Ortega and Studdard finished with two hits. Ortega went 2-for-4 while Studdard knocked two RBIs in the third inning.
Jared Huber hit a single through the right side and Ortega followed with a hit to right center field putting runners at second and third base. Studdard laced a single to right field to plate both runners and give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead they would enjoy for four innings.
Â
Tanner Hill,
Ryan Newman and Huber went 1-for-3 in the game with Hill adding two walks.
Pasquale Mazzoccoli struck out two batters in 3.1 innings of work.
Â
Texas State next travels to Huntsville, Texas, for a Monday night game against Sam Houston State at 6:30 p.m. After that, the Bobcats will make the trip to Georgia Southern for a battle between two teams tied for second place in the Sun Belt Conference.
