SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State men's basketball teams opens the 2016-17 season on Friday against Florida Atlantic in the opening game of the Outrigger Resorts Rainbow Classic. Tipoff is set for 9 p.m. CT at the 'Iolani School.
Coming off a 15-16 season in 2015-16, fourth-year head coach
Danny Kaspar brought in eight new players to the squad that will break in three new starters. This past Saturday fans got an early look at the team in a 62-41 exhibition win over Southeastern Oklahoma State.
The two starters back from last season are seniors
Ojai Black and
Kavin Gilder-Tilbury. Black finished 38th in the nation with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.79 and averaged 3.9 assists per game. Gilder-Tilbury is the lone returner that averaged double-figures at 12.3.
Returning this season seniors
Ojai Black,
Bobby Conley,
Kavin Gilder-Tilbury and
Maljhum McCrea and sophomores
Nathan Josephs and
Courtney Julien. Gilder-Tilbury enters the season as the focal point of the offense, being the only returner to average double-digits at 12.3 points per game.
Other returners that will to expand their role from last season are
Bobby Conley,
Courtney Julien and
Maljhum McCrea. Both Conley and McCrea averaged just under three points per game coming off the bench last year.
