THE COACHES
Texas State's
Everett Withers is in his first season with the Bobcats and opened with a triple overtime win at Ohio. Withers has a 27-15 career record following last Saturday's game victory against Incarnate Word. He has posted winning records in each of his three previous seasons as head coach, including the 2014 and 2015 campaigns at James Madison. He guided the Dukes to a pair of NCAA Division I FCS Playoff appearances and led North Carolina to the 2011 Independence Bowl when the Tar Heels ended the year with a 7-6 mark.
Trent Miles is in his fourth season at Georgia State and the reigning Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year after he guided the Panthers to the AutoNation Cure Bowl in the school's sixth season of existence. Miles came to Georgia State after coaching five seasons at Indiana State, where he led the Sycamores to three straight winning seasons for the first time in since 1964-69 when Indiana State had five straight winning records.
SCOUTING TEXAS STATE
Texas State enters the Georgia State game looking to win its second Sun Belt Conference opener in the last three years after joining the league in 2013. The Bobcats set a school record for most passing yards in a game with 540 yards against Incarnate Word. It also is the third-highest single game total in Sun Belt Conference history.
Senior quarterback
Tyler Jones became the first Bobcat quarterback to pass for over 400 yards in a game against the Cardinals when he set school records with 475 yards passing and five touchdown passes against Incarnate Word after completing 31 of 40 passes. His five TDs equal the fourth-highest total in Sun Belt history and marks the fourth time in his career that he has thrown four or more touchdowns in a game. His 475 passing yards were two yards shy of placing him among the Sun Belt's all-time top five single-game performances.
Freshman
Thurman Morbley was named Texas State's Offensive Player of the Week after catching a career-high six passes for 133 yards and his first-career TD catch. He became the second Bobcat to record 100 receiving yards in a game this season. He enters the Georgia State contest with 11 catches for 186 yards and a touchdown this season.
Junior tight end
Gabe Schrade recorded the first two touchdown receptions of his career when he caught four passes for 61 yards and two TDs against Incarnate Word. The two TD catches ties him with
Elijah King for the most TD receptions by a Bobcat in a game this season.
Sophomore
Tyler Watts led Texas State with a career-high seven receptions for 68 yards against Incarnate Word. His 68 yards were the most in his career as well.
Ishmael Davis was the named Texas State's Defensive Player of the Week after he recorded three tackles, including a tackle for a loss of three yards.
Bryan London led the defense with eight tackles, and he also tallied one tackle for loss. London has led the Bobcats in tackles during all four games this season. He opened this season with a career-best 12 tackles at Ohio before recording 10 tackles at Arkansas and 11 stops against Houston.
Javante O'Roy had six solo tackles, seven total stops and his first-career interception on the first play of the second half against Incarnate Word.
Anthony Taylor was named Texas State's Special Teams Player of the Week after he blocked a punt at the 5:26 mark of the third quarter. This was his first-career block and the first by a Bobcat since Terrence Franks blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown at New Mexico State on Nov. 1, 2014.
SCOUTING GEORGIA STATE
Georgia State will play its first home game since Sept. 2 when the Panthers host Texas State on Saturday. GSU's' loss at Appalachian State last Saturday snapped a four-game Sun Belt winning streak after the Panthers completed last season winning four straight conference games to earn a bowl bid.
Senior wide receiver Robert Davis became Georgia State's all-time leader in career receptions with 179 catches after he registered five catches for 56 yards against Appalachian State. He leads the nation with 41 consecutive games with a catch and his 2,712 career receiving yards ranks among the top eight active FBS receivers in the nation and his 179 career receptions is 13th highest career total among active FBS active receivers.
Defensively, the Panthers have held No. 9 Wisconsin and Appalachian State to a combined 40 points during their last two games. Georgia State surrendered 23 points at Wisconsin and just 17 points at App State, including a combined total of six yards in the first half of both games.
