SAN MARCOS, Texas – After the first Thursday break of the young conference season, the Texas State women's basketball team travels to Appalachian State for a Saturday afternoon contest slated for 12 p.m. central time. The 'Cats enter the game with a 7-5 overall record and perfect 2-0 mark in Sun Belt Conference play.
Texas State pulled away victorious last Saturday afternoon against Georgia State to earn its second-straight conference win as well as fifth victory in the last six games. The Bobcats have now started the conference slate 2-0 for the second-straight season and look to become 3-0 in SBC play for the first time in school history.
Ericka May recorded the first Texas State double-double of the season last Saturday after scoring a career-high 19 points while pulling in 12 rebounds.
Whitney Apari also had a career day on the glass as she led the 'Cats with 15 rebounds.
Kaitlin Walla notched her sixth-straight double-digit game against the Panthers and eighth of the season after scoring 15 points for the Bobcats. She leads the team with 29 made 3's this season as well as 12.6 points per contest.
Since the beginning of conference play, senior
Raven Burns has been scoring well for Texas State. Against Georgia State, she matched her career-high of 13 points and combined in conference play she has nailed six 3-pointers. Burns is averaging 12 points a game in the last two games and has made 10 3's in the last four games.
The Bobcats are led by head coach
Zenarae Antoine who is in her fifth season at the helm of Texas State. Antoine enters Saturday's contest with a 25-15 record in conference play.
A Look At The Competition – Appalachian StateThe Mountaineers of Appalachian State enter the weekend with a 4-8 overall record and 1-2 mark in SBC play. On Thursday evening, the Mountaineers suffered their second conference set back of the season with a 76-45 loss to UT Arlington.
The lone conference victory for Appalachian State was against UL Monroe in the conference opener. The Mountaineers defeated the Warhawks by a 57-54 margin. With the win against ULM, Appalachian State was riding a three-game winning streak before falling to UL Lafayette on Jan. 2.
Appalachian State, a team that finished seventh in the Sun Belt a season ago, was picked to finish eighth in the conference this season. The Mountaineers lost First-Team All-SBC forward Maryah Sydnor who averaged over 17 points both overall and in conference last season. This season, Joi Jones was selected to the Preseason All-SBC Third-Team.
Jones leads the team with 10.5 points per game, followed closely by Kaila Craven with 10.0 ppg. KeKe Cooper is the team's leading rebounder with 7.4 boards a game.
This season, the Mountaineers have been outscored 69.8 to 62.8 but own the rebounding margin by four boards.
Angel Elderkin is the head coach of Appalachian State and enters her second season on the sidelines in Boone, N.C. Last year, she led the Mountaineers to a 14-16 mark which was the second-best record in school history for a first-year head coach.
