SAN MARCOS, Texas – After prevailing in a five-set match against UTSA on Thursday, the Bobcats swept both Lamar and Prairie View A&M on Friday. Unfortunately, the Bobcats could not keep the momentum rolling as Big Ten opponent Indiana outlasted Texas State, 21-25, 14-25, 25-23, 26-24, 15-10.
Â
Despite the loss, the Bobcats finished the Delta Zeta Classic Tournament as champions with the highest winning percentage at 3-1 on the weekend.
Jordan Kohl, finishing with 43 kills and setting a new record in hitting percentage against Prairie View A&M, received the Most Valuable Player nod. Meanwhile,
Jaliyah Bolden and
Shelby Vas Matt were also named to the Delta Zeta Classic All-Tournament Team.
Â
The Bobcats came out strong against Indiana, putting down nine kills in the first set and capitalizing on seven Indiana errors to win, 25-21. In the second set, Texas State really began to impose its will with a 25-14 victory. The Bobcats put down 14 kills and just three errrors on 33 attempts for a .333 hitting percentage. Vas Matt secured her spot on the all-tournament team with seven kills in that set alone. She would go on to lead the Bobcats in kills with 13 in the match.
Â
In addition to Vas Matt's second-set kills, the Bobcats added seven more and saw 11 assists from setter
Erin Hoppe. She finished with 33 in the match. Hoppe and
Sierra Smith combined for nine digs in the second set with five from Hoppe to keep the Indiana offense off balance.
Â
The Bobcats took a 2-0 lead to the intermission and felt good about their work so far. Indiana, however, came out of the break a different team and went on to win three consecutive sets. Each one was hotly contested, but the Hoosiers came out on top to finish it.
Â
In the fourth set, the Bobcats and Hoosiers went back and forth most of the way last in the set. Texas State led, 21-17, but Indiana went on a furious 4-0 run thanks to two IU kills and two Bobcat errors. Tied, 21-21, Hoppe put down a kill for Texas State for a one-point lead. Indiana answered to tie again and both teams continued to jostle until Texas State got to match point.
Â
Thanks to an Indiana service error, the Bobcats were up 24-23 with the match in hand, but two errors and an Indiana kill gave the set to the Hoosiers. Indiana carried the momentum into the all-important fifth set to build a 4-0 lead.
Â
The Bobcats whittled the Indiana lead down and tied it at 6-6 after three consecutive IU errors. But from there, Indiana went on another 4-0 run for a 10-6 lead and it proved to be too much. The closes the Bobcats would get after that was within two points before Indiana closed out the match.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats will be a match against No. 11 Oregon on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Oregon will likely be the highest ranked opponent the Bobcats will host at Strahan Coliseum this season so be sure to come out and support Texas State Volleyball.
