SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State jumped out to a hot start against No. 12 Oregon Tuesday night. Two aces from
Erin Hoppe and kills from Oregon native
Shelby Vas Matt and
Morgan Lewis on her birthday along with an Oregon error gave Texas State a 5-0 lead. The Ducks, however, were able to fight back in the first set and continued on to sweep the Bobcats, 25-22, 25-16, 25-19.
Â
After the 5-0 lead, the Bobcats built an 8-1 lead and a 10-3 lead before Oregon could begin to make its way back into the match. The Ducks went on a 4-0 run with the score at 12-5 to pull within three, 12-9. After Texas State stopped the run with a kill from
Kelsey Weynand, Oregon continued to chip away until tied at 20-20.
Â
With Oregon down, 20-18, the Ducks went on a 5-0 run with three kills from Taylor Agost, high school teammate of Vas Matt. A kill from Martenne Bettendorf and a Texas State error put Oregon up, 23-20, and the Ducks never looked back.
Â
Lewis performed well on her birthday, leading the Bobcats in kills with eight. Freshman
Madison Daigle made a solid showing with seven kills and just two errors on 15 attempts for a .333 hitting percentage. Four other Bobcats tallied four kills apiece.
Â
Hoppe did most of the setting work for Texas State with 25 assists, adding two aces, two kills, two blocks and six digs. Weynand led the team in digs with 12.
Sierra Smith added seven more while
Alex Silver joined Hoppe with six. At the net, Texas State tallied five blocks with Lewis, Hoppe, Daigle and
Jaliyah Bolden each in on two of them.
Â
After the strong start in the first set, the Bobcats found it tough to defend the high-flying Ducks, but the Bobcats put together their best set in the third frame. Texas State tallied 15 kills in that frame with just four team errors, but Oregon would win it, 25-19 to clinch the match and improve to 6-3 on the season. Texas State drops to 3-5, but will look to bounce back this weekend at the Shocker Volleyball Invitational in Wichita, Kansas.
Â
The Bobcats will play South Dakota State and Northern Illinois on Friday followed by a match against the host Wichita State on Saturday at 1 p.m. After that, Texas State returns to Texas for a road match at Sam Houston State on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
