SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State parlayed the team's momentum from a record-breaking victory over Prairie View to start Friday into another sweep, beating Lamar, 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-15), to even the Bobcat record to 3-3 on the young season.
Â
For the second match in a row,
Jordan Kohl led the Bobcats in kills, finishing with 11. She continued to stay efficient without an error on 15 attempts for a .733 hitting percentage. Middle blocker
Morgan Lewis tagged along with eight kills of her own and just one error for a .412 hitting percentage. As a squad, the Bobcats hit .323 and capped the sweep with a .381 percentage in the third set. Junior
Shelby Vas Matt added nine kills in support.
Â
Vas Matt almost made it a double-double, finishing the night with 10 digs to lead all student-athletes in the match. Libero
Sierra Smith added nine digs as the Bobcat defense made it tough on Lamar with 39 digs in the match.
Â
Erin Hoppe showed the Bobcats have two setters who can get the job done, finishing with 21 assists for a 7.0 assist per set average against Lamar.
Emily Shelton added eight more while Smith gave out five.
Â
Texas State found the team's groove in the second set, putting down 17 kills and just three errors on 42 attempts for a .333 hitting percentage.
Â
For Texas State, though, it wasn't just efficiency or defense that won the match but hustle. Smith showed her experience by not giving up on a falling ball after a miscommunication. Most spectators had given up on the play, but Smith kept the play alive that eventually led to a kill and a point for Texas State. Later in the match, Kohl hustled after a misplayed ball. Her energy led to a kill from her at the end of the play.
Â
Both Indiana and Texas State head into the final day of the Delta Zeta Classic undefeated in the tournament, so tomorrow's matchup will be for the Delta Zeta Classic Championship.
Â
The Bobcats will finish the Delta Zeta Classic Saturday against Indiana at 4 p.m., and then set the team's sights on No. 11 Oregon. The Ducks come to town for a 6:30 p.m. match against Texas State Tuesday night.
