San Marcos, Texas – Texas State head football coach
Dennis Franchione announced Sunday that defensive coordinator John Thompson has announced his resignation effective immediately after Texas State's 59-14 loss at Houston on Saturday.
"Coach Thompson made a decision that he thought that it was in the best interest of the program that he resign," said Franchione. "That was not my choice or under my direction. It was under his. We appreciate what he has done and given to this program. We will close ranks, march on and make the appropriate decisions for us to get better."
Thompson was in his second season as the defensive coordinator at Texas State. He joined the program in March 2014 after spending two seasons at Arkansas State in a similar capacity. He also was a coordinator at Ole Miss, Florida, Arkansas, South Carolina, Louisiana Tech, Memphis, Southern Miss and Northwestern State before his stint in Jonesboro. In addition, he served a two-year stint as head coach at East Carolina.
The Bobcats will have an open week before playing their first Sun Belt Conference game at UL Lafayette on Oct. 10.
