ATLANTA, Ga. – Texas State stayed undefeated in Sun Belt Conference action with an impressive road sweep of Georgia State on Thursday night.
Shelby Vas Matt led the Bobcats with 15 kills in the match to push Texas State above .500 on the season at 8-7 and stay undefeated in conference play at 3-0 with the sweep of Georgia State, 25-20, 25-17, 25-15.
Vas Matt's 15 kills were the most efficient she has been this season. She only had one error on 32 attempts for a season best .438 hitting percentage. She added nine digs, a block and an assist.
While Vas Matt was able to lead the Bobcats offensively,
Sierra Smith made it another match with outstanding production. She finished with 23 digs in the three-setter for a 7.67 digs per set average. Before Thursday's match, Smith was averaging 3.71 digs per set. After six digs in the opening frame, she continued to stymie Georgia State's offense with nine digs in the second and eight more in the final set. She added four assists in the match.
At setter,
Erin Hoppe gave out 38 assists for an excellent 12.67 assists per set average. She built on her team lead in service aces with two more while adding seven digs and a block.
In addition to that trio,
Jordan Kohl,
Morgan Lewis and
Kelsey Weynand all had valuable production. Kohl tallied 11 kills and three blocks while Lewis put down five blocks and six kills. Weynand finished with eight kills and nine digs.
The Bobcats started strong with 16 kills in the opening frame and hitting nearly a .300 percentage while holding Georgia State to 10 kills, six errors and a .118 percentage. From there, Texas State improved with every set.
Texas State put down 19 kills on 43 attempts with six errors for a team hitting percentage of .302 in the second set. Then, defensively in the third set, the Bobcats held Georgia State to nine kills, nine errors on 42 attempts for a .000 hitting percentage.
Thanks to seven Texas State blocks and the strong work of Smith, no Panther put down more than Shae Chapman's eight kills. The Bobcat defense clearly adjusted from the first match after giving up 19 and 11 kills to Kristina Stinson and Deidra Bohannon, Texas State held the duo to just 12 combined kills.
The Bobcats head to Boone, N.C., for the team's next match against Appalachian State, looking to stay undefeated in conference play. Texas State will face the Mountaineers at 5:30 p.m. CST / 6:30 p.m. EST on
