Bobcats Suffer First Loss of Conference Play

Texas State falls to 8-8 and 3-1 in the SBC with loss

BOONE, N.C. – After winning Texas State's first three conference matches in impressive fashion, the Bobcats fell on the road to Appalachian State Saturday night. The Mountaineers won in three, 25-14, 25-21, 25-16, to drop the Bobcats to 8-8 on the season and 3-1 in Sun Belt Conference action.

For Texas State, Jordan Kohl led the team in kills with eight. Shelby Vas Matt added seven while Morgan Lewis put down six kills for the Bobcats.

Erin Hoppe ran the offense with 21 assists, four digs and a kill. Meanwhile, Sierra Smith tallied 15 digs for a 5.0 digs per set average. She added five assists. At the net, Lewis was in on both of Texas State's blocks in the match.

Lewis had a strong start to the match with five errorless kills on six attempts, but she did not get much support. The Bobcats had nine errors in the opening frame and hit .125 while Appalachian State put down 11 kills with just one error for a .417 percentage.

Texas State picked up the offense in the second set with 14 kills and just two errors on 32 attempts for a .375 hitting percentage, but the defense wasn't what it needed to be against the Mountaineers. They scored on 17 kills on 39 attempts with three errors to hit a solid .359 percentage and outlast the Bobcats, 25-21, in Texas State's best set.

Despite the improvement in the second, the Bobcat offense fell back in the third set. Texas State had 13 errors to just 10 kills on 33 attempts for a -.091 hitting percentage while the Mountaineers had nine kills and just two errors to close out the final set, 25-16.

Appalachian State's Emily Corrigan and Jess Keller both had 11 kills apiece to pace the Mountaineers. The team stymied Texas State with six blocks.

Texas State returns home for a three-match stand against Little Rock and Georgia Southern next weekend and UT Arlington on the following Tuesday.
