Troy Finishes Sweep of Texas State

Four-run inning not enough for Bobcats

TROY, Ala. – Texas State has not been swept by an opponent this season, until now. The Troy Trojans were able to complete the sweep with a 9-6 victory over the Bobcats on Sunday to drop Texas State to 10-11 in the Sun Belt Conference and 18-24-1 overall.

Texas State gave up five runs in the first two innings to build an early hole from which the team was unable to climb out. Troy's third and fourth hitters, Logan Hill and David Hall, each hit solo home runs with two outs in the first inning for the early 2-0 Troy lead. After that, in the second, with one out, centerfielder Shaw Pinnell hit for a bunt single and catcher Tripp Calhoun followed with a single to centerfield. Leadoff man Peyton Fuller hit a single to right field to plate one runner and Reid Long followed with a triple for two more runs and Troy's early 5-0 lead.

The Bobcats, however, came storming back with a four-run inning in the fifth. Luke Sherley got the team started with a one-out single down the third base line. Cory Geisler followed with a single to centerfield, and Cedric Vallieres hit a double to the left field corner to plate Sherley. With Geisler and Vallieres on base, Granger Studdard pelted out his ninth home run of the season to complete a four-run inning and pull the Bobcats to within just one run, 5-4.

The Trojans, though, were able to answer with two runs in the bottom of the inning and added two more in the seventh to go up 9-4. In the ninth, the Bobcats added two more runs to their total with back-to-back doubles from Geisler and Vallieres. Geisler scored on a groundout, and Vallieres was able to come in on a Tanner Hill double. Unfortunately, that would be all Texas State could get as a fly out ended the opportunity and the game for the Bobcats.

Geisler and Vallieres led the squad with two hits apiece, both scoring two runs, while Studdard knocked four RBI in the game. Theodore Hoffman followed a good day on Saturday with a two-hit day on Sunday, and four other Bobcats added a hit in the game.

Blake Whitter made his longest appearance of the season, going five innings. He gave up four hits and three earned runs, but struck out four batters with just one walk.

Texas State will next travel to College Station, Texas, to face one of the top teams in the country in Texas A&M at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, before traveling to Atlanta to face the Sun Belt Conference leader Georgia State.
