LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Texas State couldn't bounce back from Friday's loss to UALR on Saturday, falling by a score of 13-7. The Bobcats went down early, 6-1, after a five-run inning for the Trojans, and could not fight back after that. However, senior
Colby Targun and freshman
Jared Huber stood out for the Bobvats offensively in the loss.
Huber was not retired in the game, going a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk and knocking in Targun twice for two RBI. Meanwhile, Targun was 3-for-5 but tallied two RBI with three runs scored for the Bobcats. After UALR started the game with a run in the bottom of the first, the Texas State duo teamed up to tie the game in the second.
Targun knocked his first of two doubles in the game, sending a shot down the right field line that disappeared into the corner for an easy standup double. After that, Huber knocked a single up the middle to plate Targun and tie the game.
The UALR Trojans had other plans though, scoring five runs on five hits in the second inning. They added two more in the third to put the Bobcats down 8-1, and pushed the lead to 10-1 with two more in the fifth inning. In fact, the only innings in which UALR did not score were the fourth and eighth.
Down, 10-1, the Bobcats had their best inning of the series so far, scoring four runs in the top of the sixth inning. With one out,
David Paiz and
Granger Studdard earned back-to-back walks.
Tanner Hill loaded the bases when he legged out an infield single. With the bases loaded, a groundout from
Ben McElroy plated Paiz, but then Targun came up big.
He knocked a double to deep left centerfield to bring in both remaining runners. With him standing on second, Huber followed with a double to right center to plate Targun and make it a four-run inning for the Bobcats, cutting the UALR lead from nine runs to five.
Texas State, however, couldn't keep the momentum going as UALR scored two more runs in the sixth and an unearned run in the seventh. The Bobcats scored two eighth-inning runs with McElroy and Targun coming in off a
Cory Geisler bases-loaded walk and a bases-loaded hit by pitch for
Cedric Vallieres. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough for Texas State.
The Bobcats gave up 17 hits in the game, with 11 coming in the first three innings in which UALR scored a combined eight runs. In relief,
Tyler Giovanoni made a solid outing. He struck out two batters and gave up three hits but no earned runs in 2.1 innings of work.
Texas State will look to salvage the series at 12 p.m. Sunday against UALR. The game has been moved up due to possible inclement weather in the area.
Jeremy Hallonquist will be on the mound for the Bobcats.
