BOONE, N.C. – The Texas State men's basketball team made a valiant comeback in the second half, but it was not enough as the Bobcats fell to Appalachian State 67-64, Thursday night at the Holmes Convocation Center in Boone.Â
Kavin-Gilder Tilbury, coming off a two-game stretch which saw him be named the College Sports Madness Sun Belt Player of the week, hit a three-pointer at the buzzer of the first half to cut the Bobcats' deficit to just 32-27 heading into the break. He finished the first half with seven points and had 17 for the game.
Texas State was down 54-44 in the second half when the Bobcats' offense came alive. JaMarcus Weatherspoon attacked the basket and Wes Davis got a steal leading to an easy layup as the team cut the lead to just 54-53.
The Bobcats were down 61-58 with a minute to go when the defense got the shot clock for App State down to just two seconds but Mountaineer Chris Burgess hit a three off the back board as the shot clock expired to make it 64-58.
Texas State had one last gasp, getting a steal off an inbounds which Wes Davis converted to cut it to a 64-62 lead. Following one made free throw Davis made another layup to make it 65-64. Unfortunately App State made its free throws and the Bobcats missed a three in the final seconds to give the Mountaineers the win.
Texas State will close out the regular season on Saturday at 4:00 p.m., at ULM as it takes on the Warhawks. Saturday's game will be broadcasted on 89.9 FM KTSW, as well as www.txstatebobcats.com/radio.
