SAN MARCOS, Texas – After sweeping Troy on Halloween night, Texas State kept its winning ways with a sweep of UL Monroe on Sunday, 25-15, 25-14, 25-22. The Bobcats controlled the match throughout with
Kelsey Weynand leading the way in kills with 11 to propel Texas State to a 15-11 overall record and 10-3 slate in Sun Belt Conference action.
Weynand scored her 11 kills on an impressive .444 hitting percentage. She received support from
Madison Daigle and
Shelby Vas Matt who finished with nine and seven kills respectively. Daigle was incredibly efficient, putting down her nine kills on just 15 attempts with only one error for a .533 hitting percentage.
Texas State's 6-2 rotation continues to pay dividends.
Emily Shelton gave out 16 assists while
Erin Hoppe gave out 13. Hoppe added eight digs while Shelton added three. Hoppe's eight digs led the squad, but five Bobcats had three or more in the match.
One of the biggest advantages in the match for Texas State was the team's blocking. The Bobcats put down 13.5 blocks to just three for UL Monroe, led by
Morgan Lewis with five blocks.
Lauren Kirch tallied four block assists while
Jaliyah Bolden had a solo block and three block assists.
Texas State's strong defense forced negative hitting percentages from ULM in both of the first two sets and just a .125 hitting percentage in the third frame. Meanwhile, Texas State hit .276, .240 and finished the third set with a .370 hitting percentage for a .296 percentage for the match.
In the first set, Weynand and Daigle paced the Bobcats, combining for nine kills while Lewis put down three blocks in the set to set the tone early.
Texas State was equally dominant in the second frame. Vas Matt was impressive at the net with two solo blocks and a block assists. Bolden also put down a solo block and added a block assist in the set. For the second frame, Texas State finished with five blocks to simply stymie the ULM offense.
The closest set of the match came in the third with the Warhawks fighting to stay alive in the match. It was a struggle for both teams throughout the set with ULM actually holding a 21-20 lead to force a timeout from the Bobcats late in the frame.
Out of the timeout, the Bobcats benefitted from three consecutive ULM errors. With a 23-21 lead, Daigle and Bolden teamed up for a big block out of ULM timeout to make it match point, 24-21. Weynand finished the match with the final kill to clinch it for Texas State.
The Bobcats return to the road next to face UL Monroe on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and UL Lafayette at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
