SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State made a strong showing against Troy on the team's Pink Out night on Halloween night. The Bobcats swept the Trojans, 25-18, 25-22, 25-19, with freshman
Madison Daigle leading the way.
The freshman from Louisiana led the team in kills with 12 on a .476 hitting percentage.
Kelsey Weynand added nine kills on a .444 hitting percentage while middle blocker
Morgan Lewis putting down seven kills. Three other Bobcats finished with at least four kills.
Texas State's 6-2 offense kept Troy off balance.
Emily Shelton gave out 19 assists while
Erin Hoppe passed out 15 more. Both of them were good in service as well with Shelton serving up three aces and one from Hoppe. Weynand added two more aces while
Sierra Smith and
Shelby Vas Matt added one each.
Playing libero, Smith led the team with 20 digs while Weynand tallied 10. Three other Bobcats had at least three digs. At the net, Lewis led the charge with six blocks.
Lauren Kirch put down two block assists and a solo block while
Jaliyah Bolden had two more. The Bobcats finished with seven block to Troy's four.
The Bobcats started strong in the opening set with 15 kills to just six for Troy. Daigle led the team with four kills in the set, but other Bobcats combined for 11 more kills. Smith posted 10 digs in the first set alone. Kirch came in to provide a spark in the set with three timely kills, a solo block and a block assists.
Texas State built an 11-6 lead early in the set and never looked back. Bolden put down the final kill to put the Bobcats up 1-0.
Troy tried to rebound in the second frame as both teams battled back and forth. There were 16 ties and five lead changes I nthe second set alone. Weynand and Daigle led the team offensively with four kills in the set with Weynand doing it without an error.
Late in the set, the Bobcats were up, 22-21, before Head Coach
Karen Chisum called a timeout. From there, Texas State closed it out, starting with a kill from Weynand out of the timeout. Hoppe put down the next kill followed by one more from Weynand, then the junior from Brenham capped the set with an ace to give Texas State a 2-0 lead.
With the victory nearly secured, the Bobcats ran away with the third set, building up a lead as large as 17-10. They claimed the seven-point lead on an ace from Smith. From there, the Bobcats never looked back with freshman
Gabby Atchley capping the match with the final point.
Texas State's next match will be at 12 p.m. Sunday against UL Monroe. The match was rescheduled from its original time on Friday due to inclement weather and flooding in the area. Be sure to come out to Strahan Coliseum at 12 p.m. Sunday to support the Bobcats against UL Monroe.
