Bobcats Unable To Halt Eagles Running Game

STATESBORO, Ga. — The nation's leading rushing team proved to be too much to overcome on the road as the Texas State football team fell to Georgia Southern by a score of 37-13 Thursday evening.

How It Happened: Georgia Southern got on the board right away by using just five plays to move the ball 72 yards including a 37-yard rush on the touchdown play. All of the yards in the opening drive for the Georgia Southern were on the ground as were most of the plays for the evening.

Texas State was forced to punt in its first two drives of the game, but on Georgia Southern's second drive of the game the Bobcats forced the first of three Eagle fumbles of the game. Georgia Southern had moved into Texas State territory when Rusmin Nikocevic forced his first career fumble and Aaron Shaw recovered it for the 'Cats.

The Texas State defense went on to force and recover two more Georgia Southern fumbles in the first half, including one with seven seconds remaining in the half to slow up the Eagle offense and to stay within reach. Georgia Southern had not lost more than two fumbles all season long. Three fumbles tied a season-high for the Eagle offense. Three forced fumbles for Texas State was a season-high.

The Bobcats answered Georgia Southern's second half opening drive touchdown with one of their own, a 23-yard pass from Tyler Jones to Jafus Gaines, but the 11-point spread proved to be as close at Texas State would come for the remainder of the contest. Georgia Southern went on to score five straight times in the second half to pull away from the visiting Bobcats.

Who Stood Out: Aaron Shaw and Karee Berry recorded their first career fumble recoveries … Shaw also forced a fumble for Texas State … Lumi Kaba's finished with a career-high three punts over 50+ yards in the game … he also made two consecutive field goals of 28 and 33 yards for the first time this season (now four consecutive for Texas State … running back Robert Lowe led the offense with 91 yards on the ground … Rusmin Nikocevic recorded the first forced fumble of his career.

What It Means: Texas State falls to 2-5 on the year and 1-2 in SBC play with five games remaining on the 2015 schedule. Texas State has a much needed home stretch on the horizon with games against New Mexico State, Georgia State, and UL Monroe coming up. The Bobcats have yet to defeat Georgia Southern since the teams have made the move to FBS.

Up Next: Texas State will now return home for the next three contests, beginning with New Mexico State on Nov. 7. Kick-off on Homecoming is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Bobcat Stadium.
