Women's Basketball Falls Short At Georgia State

ATLANTA, Ga. – Despite a floor-high 19 points by junior guard Erin Peoples, the Texas State women's basketball team fell to Georgia State by a score of 74-69 Monday evening. This game was the final game of Texas State's three-game road trip to begin the 2014-15 Sun Belt Conference season.

The Bobcats fall to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in the young conference season.

In addition to her 19 points, Peoples finished with 10 rebounds for her fourth consecutive double-double and fifth of the season. Jacqueline Jeffcoat also finished with a career-high 15 rebounds and Ayriel Anderson finished with a season-high 17 points.

After a slow start by both teams on offense, Peoples scored the first basket of the game with a pass from Anderson. Peoples was fouled on the play and ultimately made her free throw for the early 3-0 lead for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats held the lead for a short while before the Panthers rattled off an 11-0 run highlighted by three, three-pointers. That run was halted by junior Raven Burns with a left wing three.

Burns' three-pointer ignited an 11-2 run for Texas State, bringing the Bobcats within one of the Panthers with 4:55 left in the first.

Georgia State proceeded to keep the Bobcats at arm's length throughout the remainder of the first half. Ti'Aira Pitts hit a jumper in the final seconds of the half to bring Texas State within four, 29-25, of the Panthers.

Out of the intermission, the Panthers continued to keep a lead over Texas State. Down 12 with 7:40 remaining, Burns and freshman Taeler Deer rattled off back-to-back three-pointers to cut the Georgia State lead to six. After a made free throw by the Panthers later, Peoples hit another fastbreak lay-up from Anderson to extend it to an 8-1 run.

The Bobcat run continued after a few possessions when Jeffcoat hit a pair of free throws to cut the Panther lead to just three.

The three-point deficit would prove to be as close at the Bobcats would come to the Panthers for the remainder of the game.

Texas State finished the game shooting 35.3 percent from the floor after a 48.4 percent showing in the second half. The Bobcats finished with 12 assists led by Anderson with a season-high eight.

The Bobcats will now return home for a three-game home stand, starting Thursday evening against UALR. Tip-off against the Trojans is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Strahan Coliseum. Live stats, live video, and live audio will be available at www.txstatebobcats.com. A live radio broadcast of the game will be available at 89.9 FM KTSW.
